Commenting on reports of an estimated £2bn NHS surplus, Karen Jennings, Head of Health for UNISON, the UK's largest health union, said:
"The dramatic swing in NHS finances reveals a lack of proper control and financial planning. This money should be ploughed into building up capacity in the NHS to improve patient care.
"This surplus shows too, that staff and local communities were put through a lot of unnecessary pain and anxiety when recent NHS deficits led to damaging cuts and closures. It also proves that there was no justification to the Government's decision to stage the pay rise of nurses and other health workers in England."
