Genomatix Software GmbH of Munich, Germany and its US branch Genomatix Software, Inc. in Ann Arbor, MI (USA) has announced the release of LitInspector.

LitInspector can be accessed without limits and free of charge by the scientific community world wide. All that is required is registration for a free evaluation account for the Genomatix Portal from http://www.genomatix.de11/28/2007 or http://www.genomatix-software.com/.

LitInspector is a powerful literature and pathway mining system based on all published abstracts and related meta-information (like MeSH) from entire PubMed of the National Library of Medicine. With more than 260,000 gene synonyms, LitInspector uses one of the largest gene synonym tables available, thus securing a substantial amount of relevant information for scientists not knowing all synonyms of their gene of interest. Additional free text input and boolean operators allow for focussed literature searches.

MeSH term and keyword classifiers like "disease", "tissue", or "pathway" lead to comprehensive results within seconds.

More than 1.6 million gene-gene relations are pre-analyzed. Pathway associations and links to KEGG, STKE and BioCarta are provided.

At each step, LitInspector optionally branches out into Genomatix´ integrated suite of systems biology databases and analysis technology, such as the ElDorado genomic annotation database.

"Why are we giving away LitInspector free of charge to everybody?" asks Klaus J.W. May, Chief Business Officer of Genomatix Software GmbH. "We have several reasons", he answers his own question. "LitInspector´s power and broad applicability reaches way beyond our existing user base. It is a tool which can and should be used by any life science researcher looking up literature for genes, diseases, or pathways." he continues.

"Secondly, LitInspector is a proof of our expertise and the extremely rich content which we have developed over the last ten years. LitInspector has been used in-house as a stepping stone for the development of our BiblioSphere PathwayEdition gene regulatory pathway and networks mining tool for several years now. Why hide it away from the public" Genomatix has such a wealth of quality checked content, not immediately evident. E.g. our ElDorado genomic annotation database surpasses any public domain gene browser at least by the factor of five in number of transcripts and regulatory regions, plus tons of data not available anywhere else. I count on LitInspector further raising the awareness of Genomatix", he concludes.
