Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.) on Thursday after a roundtable discussion with mental health advocates at the Carrier Clinic in New Jersey called for congressional approval of a bill (HR 1424) that would require insurers to provide equal coverage for physical and mental care, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. During the panel discussion, participants addressed the economic and social costs associated with mental health.
Holt said, "New Jersey already requires this parity, but extending this law across the nation is important for getting the mentally ill the treatment they need, increasing productivity, and keeping families together" (Newark Star-Ledger, 12/2).
