Indiana University Distinguished Professor Hal E. Broxmeyer, Ph.D., a pioneer in the field of umbilical cord blood transplantation for the treatment of leukemia and anemia, will be honored Dec. 10 at the American Society of Hematology's annual meeting in Atlanta.

Dr. Broxmeyer is the recipient of the 2007 E. Donnall Thomas Prize. At the presentation ceremony, he will discuss his research and the scientific discoveries that led to the successful use of cord and placental blood for treating malignant and non-malignant disorders, as well as ways to enhance the efficacy of cord blood transplatation in the future.

The award is named in honor of Dr. Thomas, who in 1990 was awarded a Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Dr. Broxmeyer is the chair and Mary Margaret Walther Professor of Microbiology/Immunology, a professor of medicine and the scientific director of the Walther Oncology Center at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

He is the 2002 recipient of the Karl Landsteiner Memorial Award, presented by the American Association of Blood Banks. This prestigious award, which claims seven Nobel Prize winners among its honorees, also recognizes original research contributing to the field of blood-related disease and treatments.
