Main Category: Public HealthArticle Date: 10 Dec 2007 - 4:00 PDT
The Medical Protection Society (MPS) announced that it has now over 250,000 members worldwide. This confirms MPS's status as the largest international indemnifier of healthcare professionals.
Formed in 1892 MPS has continued to expand over recent years. MPS now offers support to members in over 35 jurisdictions including UK, Ireland, Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and the West Indies.
Members have access to expert advice from a 24-hour emergency helpline - in the past five years approx 250,000 calls have been taken by our medicolegal advisers on a wide range of issues. We have handled over 6,000 medical council inquiries and dealt with more than 11,700 clinical negligence cases.
Tony Mason, Chief Executive said: "Reaching a membership of over quarter of million is a milestone and it confirms our position as the only protection organisation that is truly international for healthcare professionals. This shows globally that doctors still prefer the benefits offered by a discretionary mutual organisation.
"It is the high quality of MPS protection and peace of mind which it provides, which makes MPS the first choice for doctors and dentists. Our collective worldwide experience strengthens our position to offer expert advice and assistance to each and every member."
