Bruce Vladeck, who served as administrator of the federal agency now known as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services under President Bill Clinton, has been elected president of the board of directors of the Medicare Rights Center, the nation's largest independent source of health care information and assistance for people with Medicare.

Dr. Vladeck, currently an executive director of Ernst & Young's Health Sciences Advisory Services practice, serves as the firm's senior healthcare policy advisor. Bruce recently returned to EY after completing 16 months as interim president of the University of Medicine and Dentistry at the request of Governor Jon Corzine.

"We are thrilled to have Bruce Vladeck's leadership and wisdom moving into 2008," said Robert M. Hayes, Medicare Rights Center staff president.

Marilyn Moon, vice president and director of the Health Program at the American Institutes for Research, who was the Medicare Rights Center's board president from 2005 through 2007, said, "Dr. Vladeck will help the Medicare Rights Center continue to build its stature in defending, improving and expanding Medicare in the years ahead."

After serving in the Clinton Administration, Dr. Vladeck was professor of health policy and geriatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He is a member of the New York City Board of Health, a trustee of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation, and a member of the Editorial Board of Health Affairs.

Dr. Vladeck has served as president of the United Hospital Fund of New York, and has held senior positions at Columbia University and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Vladeck has published widely, perhaps most notably his book, Unloving Care: The Nursing Home Tragedy.
