The American Lung Association's volunteers and staff wish to express our deepest condolences to the family of U.S. Congresswoman Julia Carson, who died Saturday after a courageous battle with lung cancer. A long-time champion for the disadvantaged and a tireless advocate for her Indianapolis constituents, Congresswoman Carson also was a strong supporter of lung health. Her support of clean, healthy air and environmental protection, biomedical research and tobacco control will be greatly missed.
Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in the U.S and kills more women than any other kind of cancer. We combat lung cancer everyday by preventing smoking, helping smokers quit and reducing air pollution. The American Lung Association is committed to funding vital research to help fight this devastating disease. Our Lung Cancer Discovery Award (in partnership with the LUNGevity Foundation) is specifically directed at developing improved treatments and cures. Through education, research and advocacy, we are working towards the day that lung cancer is a rare and curable disease.
