Ortho-McNeil Neurologics, Inc. has partnered with the Epilepsy Foundation to create the "Speaking Out for Epilepsy" podcast, a new educational resource for the more than three million Americans with epilepsy.

The podcast features Alan Faneca of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Alan has overcome many obstacles on his journey to becoming a six-time, All-Pro offensive guard - his greatest challenge, however, was off the field when he was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 14. Podcast listeners will hear Alan talk candidly about his determination to not let epilepsy come between him and his dream of being a professional football player.

Another highlight of the podcast is an interview with Hapa, one of Los Angeles' leading disc jockeys and musical artists who has experienced seizures since age 17. Today Hapa runs a disc jockey academy and works with children with epilepsy, helping them to build confidence and independence. He shares his personal story of managing epilepsy and provides podcast listeners with ideas on how they can take charge of their lives.

Lastly, Dr. James Valeriano, a neurologist with Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh helps people with epilepsy better understand how to identify and communicate their own needs to their healthcare professionals. Dr. Valeriano discusses how a strong relationship with your healthcare professional can lead to ensuring that patients get the best care possible.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. In most cases, the cause of epilepsy is unknown or presumed genetic; however, 30 percent of cases are attributed to brain trauma, brain lesions, infections, high fevers, birth injuries or congenital malformation; currently, there is no cure.

It's important for people with epilepsy to feel empowered to live life to the fullest. In order to do that, they need access to resources that educate them, reinforce that they're not alone and challenge them to achieve their dreams.
