Infection control company Inviro Medical Devices is helping its customers advance their "green" initiatives, by supplying products creating less medical waste than competitive products and by using more recyclable components in their safety syringes and packaging materials.

The company's innovative InviroSNAP!® Safety Syringe, once activated, takes up less medical waste space than retro-fitted safety syringes. An internal study performed by Jean McDowell, vice president of clinical affairs, found that InviroSNAP! took up less than half the space in sharps containers than retro-fitted safety syringes.

Additionally, the cap and plunger components of the InviroSNAP! Safety Syringe, Inviro's flagship infection control product, are clean materials and can be placed in a medical site's recycle bins. Inviro is also moving ahead in its waste reduction efforts with its packaging for its flu and allergy trays. The trays contain 25 safety syringes in a single tray that are sterile, but not individually wrapped, making for less paper and less waste in general. The infection control company has simplified its dispenser boxes and case shippers incorporating recyclable materials in both.

"Since our company was created, we have recognized the Green Initiatives of the healthcare industry and continually strive to meet the needs in the medical field for waste reduction, more environmentally friendly packaging and using materials that can be recycled," said Gareth Clarke, chief executive officer of Inviro.Medical Devices. "Our entire product line, including the InviroSNAP! safety syringe, consists of products that fit this model."

Looking for future improvements, Inviro recently partnered with a local university in order to develop advanced packaging options for further waste reduction and to reduce the company's environmental footprint. In addition, the company recently joined the organization "Hospitals for a Healthy Environment," which strives to work toward waste reduction in the health care sector as a whole.
