International specialists in the treatment of skin cancers today launched a training package for dermatology clinics that will support the wide-scale adoption of the highest standards of treatment across Europe.
The European Society for Photodynamic Therapy in Dermatology (EURO-PDT), formed in 2000, is dedicated to the promotion of clinical best practice in the area of photodynamic therapy, a system of treating cancerous and non-cancerous skin lesions that produces excellent clinical and cosmetic results.
As photodynamic therapy has gained in popularity and licensed treatments are available, EURO-PDT is keen to ensure that clinics representing best practice in this field share their knowledge and expertise with colleagues who are initiating services.
Prof Lasse Braathen, president of EURO-PDT, said: "Photodynamic therapy is a well-researched treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers and pre-cancerous skin lesions that produces excellent results and is popular with patients.
"Between the members of EURO-PDT we have many years of experience working with this therapy and as it becomes more widely available we would like to ensure the highest standards of treatment, hence the launch of this training module."
There are a range of treatments available for non-melanoma skin cancers and photodynamic therapy is among the newer ones. Its advantage is that the treatment is relatively painless, with few side effects, excellent cure rates and produces cosmetic results that are unparalleled by any other treatment. As such, it represents an excellent choice for both patients and dermatologists.
