Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) and first lady Sue Carcieri on Wednesday gathered with dozens of abortion-rights opponents in the State House rotunda in Providence, R.I., to protest abortion rights, the Providence Journal reports. Carcieri spokesperson Jeff Neal said the governor did not participate in the rally to lobby for specific legislation but rather to show his support for the antiabortion advocates.

"The most important thing that we as a nation can protect is life," Donald Carcieri told the crowd. Sue Carcieri applauded the protesters and said that she and the governor plan to advocate against abortion rights after he leaves office. Protesters at the rally, which was sponsored by the Rhode Island State Right to Life Committee, carried signs with the slogans, "Stop Abortion Now" and "Thank you President Bush." Protesters also called for a change in the state's abortion laws (Needham, Providence Journal, 1/31).
