Grants Awarded To Study Cancer Care Access Among Asians, Improve Diabetes Care Among Minorities; Fashion Show Aims To Raise Cardiac Health Awareness

Center for Pan Asian Community Services: The group has received a $600,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum to collect information about Asian immigrants' access to health care and develop a module to teach the community about cancer, which is the leading cause of death among the group. The center will work with the Georgia Asian Pacific Islander Community Coalition on the effort. It intends to hire two new workers to collect the data on access to cancer services (Pickel, Atlanta Journal Constitution, 1/27).

Fashion from the Heart: Stamford Hospital and the Fairfield County, Conn., chapter of Links Inc. are sponsoring the fashion show, which aims to raise awareness among blacks and Hispanics about heart disease. Along with the fashion show, actors will perform skits dealing with childhood obesity, as well as how to perform CPR and use a defibrillator. The show is scheduled for Feb. 29 (Lee, Stamford Advocate, 1/29).

Robeson Health Care Corp.: The N.C. Health and Wellness Trust Fund has awarded the group a $326,699 grant to help improve care coordination for American Indians, blacks and Hispanics with diabetes. Robeson Health Care Corp. will work with the Diabetes Community Center at Southeastern Regional Medical Center on the effort (Fayetteville Observer, 1/28).
