Kroger Launches Discount Drug Program, Includes Generic Birth Control

On Wednesday, the Cincinnati-based Kroger announced that it will begin selling 30-day supplies of more than 300 generic prescription drugs, including birth control pills, at significant discounts at participating pharmacies nationwide, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The discount drug program will cover generic versions of Ortho Cyclen and Ortho Tri-Cyclen (Stafford, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 2/6). The program offers a 28-day supply of birth control for $9 and a fertility drug for $9, compared with the national average price of $24 to $30 for a monthly supply, the Dallas Morning News reports. The program also will sell generic versions of drugs for certain conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and thyroid for $4 (Roberson, Dallas Morning News, 2/5).

Wal-Mart Stores launched a similar discount drug program in September 2006. The company also offers generic versions of Ortho Cyclen and Ortho Tri-Cyclen, as well as a fertility drug, for $9 per 30-day supply.
