The British Dental Association (BDA) has launched a new scheme to help young dentists who have completed their NHS vocational training take the next step forward in their careers. The one-year scheme, VT Advance, will help young dentists prepare for life in modern, patient-centred dentistry. Participants will be based in a dental practice with a dedicated trainer. They will benefit from a guaranteed minimum income of £35,000, a comprehensive programme of training and a formal programme of support.

Those taking part will be known as 'vocational associates'. Each vocational associate will have a personal development plan and will benefit from tailored training in a practice environment. They will attend 12 study days during their year which will help to consolidate and expand their clinical skills and provide grounding in the business skills necessary for the successful running of a dental practice. Five of the Faculty of General Dental Practice's key skills - clinical record-keeping, infection control, legislation and good practice guidelines, medical emergencies and radiography - will be covered by the programme. The scheme will be free to participating vocational associates.

Launching VT Advance, Graham Brown, Chair of the BDA's Education Committee, said:

"VT Advance offers a unique pathway to help young dentists develop their skills and experience in a supportive environment that we at the BDA hope will give participants the best possible start to their professional lives. Participation represents an excellent opportunity for young dentists to enhance their all-round skills and take a significant step forwards in their careers."

Initially, there will be two schemes, one operating in the London area and one in the West Midlands. To be eligible for the schemes, candidates should already have completed their vocational training year. Further information and details of how to apply to join VT Advance are available from the BDA website or from David Campbell at the BDA on 020 7563 6896 or d.campbell@bda.org.

Notes

1. VT Advance was officially launched at the BDA/UCL Eastman Dental Institute's Career Opportunities in UK Dentistry conference and exhibition at London's Hotel Russell.

2. The British Dental Association (BDA) is the professional association for dentists in the UK. It represents over 20,000 dentists working in general practice, in community and hospital settings, in academia and research, and in the armed forces.
