Growing demands for water in many parts of the nation present significant challenges to effective management of water resources. Each year the National Academy of Sciences presents the Gilbert F. White Lecture in the Geographical Sciences, named in honor of the geographer who identified major water management strategies and examined how the United States could make sound decisions in this area. This year's lecture by University of Maryland professor and National Academy of Engineering member Dr. Gerald E. Galloway, titled "Managing American water resources: Recognizing the realities of geography," will focus on the lessons learned from White and how his principles should be applied to the development of a rational and scientifically informed approach to water management in the 21st century.

DETAILS:

The lecture will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 27 in Room 100 of the Keck Center of the National Academies, 500 Fifth St., N.W, Washington, D.C. Additional information is available online at http://dels.nas.edu/besr/lecture.shtml.
