According to the National Eating Disorders Association, five to ten million adolescent girls and women, and 1 million boys and men struggle with eating disorders-a sum total that triples the number of people living with AIDS in the United States. These serious and often misunderstood illnesses impact not only those who suffer from the disorder but also the parents, spouses, friends, loved ones, and the community at large.

Each year the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) recognizes eating disorders awareness week the last week in February to promote awareness, treatment and prevention of eating disorders. On Saturday, March 1, the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP), an organization dedicated to education and prevention of eating disorders and body image issues, is joining NEDA in its celebration.

In honor of National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (February 24-March 1), the Southern California chapters of IAEDP will be co-hosting an insightful, educational and deeply meaningful gathering to celebrate building awareness in the community. The event features eating disorder documentaries, author book signings and art exhibits. Join Special Guest Nancy Redd, author of the New York Times best seller Body Drama and NAACP Image Award nominee. Recently featured in People magazine, Nancy is a former Miss America contestant (among her many achievements) who is dedicated to spreading a positive message to young women of all ages. "Evening of Jazz Under the Stars" takes place at the Pavilion at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu on Saturday, March 1, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Calamigos Ranch is located at 327 S. Latigo Canyon Road in Malibu.

The event is open to healthcare professionals, individuals with eating disorders (and those in recovery), as well as their family and friends. The cost for admission is $35/person. To register, please call 562-457-7373.
