2008 Annual Meeting Of The National Academy Of Sciences

From April 26 to 29, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences will hold its 145th annual meeting, at which new Academy members will be elected. ELECTION RESULTS will be available online at noon EDT on April 29 at http://national-academies.org/. Various public sessions will be held in the auditorium of the National Academy of Sciences building, 2100 C St., N.W., Washington, D.C.
PUBLIC EVENTS:
APRIL 26, 8 P.M. TO 9 P.M. - Induction ceremony and signing of the "Registry of Membership" for members elected in 2007. A reception will follow from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.
APRIL 27, 9 A.M. TO 10:30 A.M. - Kavli Frontiers of Science: The Expanding Universe This symposium will introduce the cosmological model that researchers are investigating and will address how recent observations have presented fundamental challenges to our understanding of gravity and particle physics.
APRIL 27, 11 A.M. TO NOON - Einstein: His Life and Universe Walter Isaacson, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute, will discuss his book Einstein: His Life and Universe. Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, the biography explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk became the locksmith of the atom and the universe. A book signing will follow the lecture.
APRIL 27, 2 P.M. TO 3 P.M. - Awards Ceremony Recipients of NAS awards bestowed in 2008 will be honored, including Norman P. Neureiter, director of the Center for Science, Technology, and Security Policy at American Association for the Advancement of Science, who will receive the Academy's most prestigious award, the Public Welfare Medal.
APRIL 28, 3 P.M. TO 5 P.M. - Autism: A Glance Back and A Look Forward This symposium will focus on the search for biomarkers and identification of genetic risk factors associated with various autisms. Advances in cognitive neuroscience coupled with non-invasive imaging and recording techniques have begun to shed light in this area.
