In April the University of Granada will host an "International Symposium on Healthy Lifestyle and Nutrition in Europe: from pregnancy to adolescence", a meeting that will join about 300 researchers from all over the world. The activity is part of the European project EARNEST, which incorporates 38 companies and universities from 16 countries.

Organized by the department of Paediatrics of the University of Granada, this meeting has been aimed at paediatricians, neonatologists, obstetricians, biochemists, physiologists, nutritionists, dieticians, pharmaceutics, biologists, nurses, matrons, etc.

The symposium, directed by professors Cristina Campoy Folgoso (Department of Paediatrics of the University of Granada) and Berthold Koletzko (University of Munich), will analyse the last results of EARNEST in children's nutrition and the appearance of different diseases in adulthood (cardiovascular problems, diabetes, obesity, allergy, bone health and neuromotor and behaviour results).

Programmed framework lectures:

1. "Early Nutrition Programming of Obesity and insulin resistance", by Berthold Koletzko (Germany);

2. "Early nutrition and mental development", by Mijna Hadders-Algra (Holland);

3. "Development of the immunological system and its relationship with children's nutrition", by Philip Calder (United Kingdom),

4. "Children's nutrition: Policies and Communication", by Monique Raats (United Kingdom).

EARNEST Project

The EARNEST Project (The Early Nutrition Programming Project - http://www.metabolic-programming.org/) intends to help to design action policies, information campaigns and preparation of documents, guides and recommendations relating to children food composition for the improvement of children formulas and the creation of interventions to prevent and revert the effects of nutrition in metabolism.

EARNEST is coordinated by the University Ludwig-Maximilians of Munich (Germany). The project started in April 2005 and has a length of 5 years.
