UroToday.com - Dr. Kim and colleagues from UCLA described a surgical technique to address an incontinent catheterizable stoma. Reinforcement of the continence mechanism is accomplished via the ileocecal valve, plication of the ileal segment, and crossover of two rectus muscle bellies over the catheterizable limb. Complications included difficulty with catheter passage, urinary incontinence, and bowel necrosis.
Dr Anger , et al., reported on the results of an analysis of male Medicare patients with urethral stricture disease that indicated underuse of the urethroplasty in favor of the less invasive, albeit less efficacious techniques.
Dr. Sirium from USC shared their findings following a retrospective review of 54 spinal cord injury patients at a minimum of 30 year follow up. In their cohort, despite new onset hydronephrosis in 9%, no patient developed renal insufficiency as determined by serum creatinine and glomerular filtration rate, suggesting that rigorous annual follow up of stable SCI patients may not be necessary over the very long term.
Moderated by: Karl J. Kreder, Jr., MD and Allen F. Morey, MD at the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU) 2008 Winter Meeting - February 28 - March 2, 2008 Miami, Florida, USA
