HHS recently awarded New York City more than $102 million in funding from the Ryan White Program that will be used to provide HIV/AIDS services in the city, NY1 News reports (NY1 News, 3/4). According to Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), New York City remains the "epicenter" of the U.S. HIV/AIDS epidemic with 3,672 new AIDS cases recorded in 2006. There are a total of about 99,000 recorded HIV/AIDS cases in the city.

According to Schumer, the funds will be used for outpatient health care, home health and hospice care, nutrition services, case management and transportation services for people living with HIV/AIDS. "As increasing numbers of people with HIV/AIDS live longer, the cost of care and treatment places greater demands on families and friends, as well as local governments and community-based organizations," Schumer said. He added, "This critical [Ryan White] funding will ensure that New York City has the necessary resources to care for those with HIV/AIDS." New York City received about $100 million in Ryan White funding in 2007 (Schumer release, 3/4).
