Lyrica - Having Weight Gain Issues
posted by Maggie on 29 Aug 2006 at 11:46 am
Just got off the phone with Pfizer because I too have gained weight especially aroung my midsection and upper belly area. I expressed my concern about my weight gain problem since on Lyrica. She just stated it is a common side effect. I told her I was coming off the medication immediately. I asked what she would do with the information I provided. Stated she would give to to Pfizer officials and the FDA. In either case I will search for something else to relieve my neuropathy pain. Like someone else said, I do not want to be in pain and overweight!
Everyone on this site should call Pfier at 1-800-438-1985. A nurse will speak to you. We should all tell them what this Lyrica is doing as far as weight gain.

I too gained weight on lyrica. 20lbs in two weeks. I stopped taking it. It also made my blood pressure go up. This was in January 2006.

If we all had the luxury of deciding against a medication because of its side effects such as "weight gain" we would live in a utopian world. But when pain is so severe you would rather die than settle for medications with side effects, which would you choose?
Severe Head Pain Or Weight Gain??
posted by Tricia Looker on 18 Oct 2006 at 6:18 pm
I experienced 'severe' pains in the right side of my head for 5 months last year, due to Occipital nerve damage. There was 'nothing' available that came near to relieving that pain, until the LYRICA was released in the Fall of last year. (2005) Yes, I have gained weight. About 18 pounds. Enough to not fit in most of my clothes anymore. Also the BP went up, and am on meds for that. I enjoyed wearing a size 'small', where now it's 'Medium' or 'large'. BUT, the Lyrica has been a miracle med to me in that I don't suffer anymore from daily severe head pains. For me....there is no choice. It's a love/hate relationship with the Lyrica that's for sure!

Thank you for your opinions on weight gain with Lyrica. I've been on it for 4 months and gained a noticeable, frustrating amount of weight. I'm always first to take fault in any wt. gain change but know now that it is a real side effect affecting real people.Thank you for the reassurance.

I have been on Lyrica for over a year now. I have tried many times to wean off this drug. I have gained over 30 pounds and cannot stand to look in the mirror anymore. I am going off it cold turkey and know it will be hell. I have no illusions about how hard it will be. I have decided that any drug that can do this to my body is not the drug for me. I am going to turn to other alternatives. Less any of you think I may not be suffering from much pain. My dose has been 1200mg every day. I wish the best for all of you on it and if you have any doubts about it get off. I have learned one thing I will never again take a drug and not do my homework on it. Good luck to all.

I have never had a problem with weight gain until I started taking Lyrica. I take it for chronic back pain and it works with my other pain meds to give me the most relief I've ever had, but this weight is causing stress on my other joints. My doctor said the weight gain should 'level off' soon, but it keeps edging up! Is there a withdrawal when you stop taking it?

I have gained close to 40 lbs since September and didn't realize why. My constant desire for food is incredible. Then I found out that Lyrica caused weight gain. My doc. lowered the dose and increased my dosage of topamax which helps u loose weight.

I have noticed an increase in weight, especially in the mid-section since I'm on Lyrica. I'm just starting a new pain med to help decrease the amoung of Lyrica I take, this one has a side effect of making you lose your appetite - so we'll see. I am glad to hear it wasn't just me eating more! I exercise 6 days a week and have still gained, only in the middle section.
Lyrica And Weight Gain And Pain

I am so glad I found this site. I have been taking Lyrica for about a month and I too have gained a lot of weight around my mid section and upper stomach area. Additionally, it has not done much to resolve the searing pain I have in my leg - my doctor said to keep upping my dose but after reading all of these posts.
I am simply going off of it. I did go off once before and I felt horrible, but like someone above said, to be fat and in pain - and getting old - forget about it. Has anyone had success with any other medication?

I am thinking that I too will have to come off this drug, I have been taking it for leg pain for 2 weeks and I too have noticed that my "fat" jeans are tight now. I can't live with being in constant pain, and gaining more weight just to be out of pain. I am also getting older and it is hard to keep the weight off. Can I just stop taking this lyrica?

I have been on Lyrica almost 2 months. While it has helped one aspect of my neuropathy, that being the electrical shocks I have had since childhood, I am suffering from weight gain. I have been dreaming about food. I have always had a tendency to be overweight but now I have no self control around food.
In addition, old symptoms which I have not experienced since childhood are resurfacing since the shocks have stopped. I am refering to the dead limb sensation from lack of bloodflow.
Also it may be the weight gain but my limbs feel like they weigh a ton and the pain of my foot goes much further up my leg now. I have had a little improvement with RLS. I am still restless at night when I want to sleep.

I have been on lyrica for 5 weeks for chronic severe nerve pain in my neck. The pain is so much better--but I have gained 30 pounds and am now having joint pain from the added weight. I hate to go off what has been a "miracle drug" for me and cut down greatly on my other pain medications--but, like others on this site, do not was to add extra weight to my already multiple health problems. Has anyone tried lowering dosages and what has been the result?

I had back surgery on January 8th 2007 and thought I had just gained weight because I was a little more idle than usual. I take pain meds but have been taking lyrica for three months for nerve damage I suffered in my right leg. I too gained weight and after trying Atkins for the past two weeks to get a jump start (I know it works I have done it before) I didn't lose a pound! I am going to stop taking it. My nerves will heal as they will and I'd rather bear the pain. I can't believe I sat down to look for information today and found all of you. Thanks for sharing. I feel like I may have control now.

I would love to chat with Kelly Cooney. I too had back surgery and suffer with nerve damage to my left leg. Started on the lyrica, seems to help the pain but I have gained weight around the mid-section and can't seem to lose it. They want me to try Cymbalta. Has anyone tried it? Wondering if it will also causes weight gain.
Off Lyrica
posted by Kelly Cooney on 05 Apr 2007 at 4:51 pm
I would never suggest that anyone stop taking this drug if you really need it. For example, Joanne really seems to need it. I stopped taking it when I posted my initial opinion. I had headaches for a couple days but that was about it. My nerve pain is not much different than when I was on the drug. I think I can do without it personally and have finally begun to lose weight. I am not sure what the drug is that Karen Watson was referring to but I do know that when I saw my Doctor on 30 March I told him about the weight gain and lack of ability to lose weight. He told me there was another drug I could take in Lyrica's place but it would probably produce the same symptoms. Best of luck to all of you!

I'm a nurse with 2 herniated lumbar discs, 3 more bulging, spinal stenosis, lumbar ridiculopathy, DJD, arthritis, and who knows what else. I take a pain med up to 4 times a day as needed, and that has been working for me so far with the nerve blocks, epidurals, etc.
Last year I saw an orthopedic surgeon, who put me on Lyrica for the sharp shooting pain down my legs, and the numbness and tingling. I still get the symptoms on 75 mg twice a day, but not as bad as before. BUT, all of a sudden, it was like I woke up one day, and I was fat! I mean fat!! I wore size small or medium scrubs, and I had to go out and buy size large!! How do you grow out of scrubs?? I have been so upset about this, I didn't know what to do.
I joined weight watchers, and started counting points, and Iost 7 pounds in 2 months, and that was it. I couldn't drop another pound. I looked into the injections I get, because I know steroids put weight on you, but I didn't think it would be this much. I stopped getting the injections, but I didn't stop growing. So I started looking into the rest of my meds, and that's what brought me to this site. Thank you all who have told your stories here. I will not take one more dose of Lyrica again. I just hope the weight will go away. Does any one out ther know if it will?
Losing Weight

I've gained 60 lbs on Lyrica in the last 7-8 months. I've been off it for 3 months. First week I lost 0. Then in 4 days I lost 6lbs. The next week I gained most of it back. The next week I lost a total of 8 lbs. I am so thankful. I will continue to keep you all posted, as it seems everyone that had this question quit the Lyrica but never came back! Good luck all...
Weight Gain On Small Dose

I have had fibromayalgia for over 20 years. I work for a Dr. that specializes in this.I don't want to take narcotics, so other than a muscle relaxer I have always dealt with it.
Last year the drug reps told my Dr. about success with Lyrica and fibro. I am tall and thin and if I ever gain a few pound, my midsection is the last place it goes. I started 75 mg three times a day and had no pain for the first time in 20 years. But after a week or two, I was trying on some new clothes and I had "love handles".
A few of our patients began to notice weight gain, so I asked the drug rep. He was not even aware that this was a problem. But now he says an average of 7% is normal. But many of our patients are gaining much more than that. Some have stopped it. Some choose the pain relief. I have stopped and restarted several times, depending on my pain. But I always get "love handles" in a few days. The drug rep can't really explain it. My diet never changes.
Lyrica And Cymbalta

I just started Lyrica because Cymbalta stopped working for me. Someone wanted to know about Cymbalta. It made me feel the best I have in years, but one day it just quit! My MD said that was normal. I gained about 20 pounds in the nine months I took it. I'm now trying Lyrica. Helps with nerve pain, but my hands and feet still feel cold and tingle. I'm taking 75 mg. twice a day, but I feel it wearing out after six hours. What should I do? Any advice?

I think you should call your doctor, he will probably want to up your dose. It was the best pain relief for me, but I gained 60 lbs and asked to be taken off of it. Now I'm on Trileptal with half the relief, but starting to lose that weight! Best of luck!
