Post-Monsoon Sickness Season In India
posted by Bisaal Khatreta on 03 Oct 2006 at 2:50 am
In India every year, after 2-3 months of Monsoon season, there is a general sickness season--colds, dengue, chikun gunia. Could this be the reason?.
I suppose that the vitamin-d levels of most Indians could be low after 2-3 months of general cloudiness and
dengue in particular seems to affect the richer sort of people (who don't get much sun in any case).

Epidemic Influenza And Vitamin D
Seasonal question
posted by Ryan Less on 08 Sept 2010 at 1:39 pm
I am wondering if the vitamin D levels in tropical areas are still significantly higher than other populations, during the influenza season? If those people have much higher levels, and still gedt influenza etc in the winter, then maybe its not the vitamin D. For example in someone in a latitude where uvb is more available, if they have n average winter level of 50 and still get influenza, then it couldn't be the vitamin D. am wondering if this has been considered, ie the actual levels not just in relation to other parts of the year.
Tropical Areas Have Less Flu
posted by Mark Haymond on 13 Sept 2010 at 11:34 am
Ryan, your question has been studied. People living in tropical climates have higher vitamin D levels, suffer less from flu, autism, MS and other Vitamin D related illnesses. You might find an isolated case where this is not true. It depends on how much time they spend outside with their skin exposed to the sun, how much they cover up with clothes, sun block etc.
Vit D and interactions with heart meds

I read recently that high doses of Vitamin D can interfere with heart medications and statin drugs for cholesterol. Is there any research on that you can share with us?
Amazing Benefits of Vitamin D
posted by Patricia Middleton on 22 Sept 2010 at 11:40 pm
This is an absolutely illuminating article, which explains not only the reason why Vitamin D protects us from catching the flu, by increasing our broad-spectrum antimicrobial peptides, but also tells that Vitamin D protects us from our bodies' overproduction of inflammatory cells once infection set in, and thus prevents death by the body's own immune system killing itself.
By the way, there are other diseases, such as dengue fever, which becomes more deadly the second time it is contracted, because of an extremely overzealous immune response. Perhaps Vitamin D treatment would be life-saving for these diseases as well. This is all very good news, and I am going to tell everyone I know about Vitamin D for fall, winter, and spring immunity.
What is the recommended dose for children, on a age related basis? This information will be very important to know, so all ages can be protected. Also, how does Vitamin D affect autism? And does Vitamin D prevent heart attacks? And finally, does Vitamin D have other benefits? Thank you so much, in advance, for the answers to these questions, and for this article!

Age or Weight related doses for Children
posted by C. Johnson on 24 Nov 2010 at 5:42 am
Great article. I too wonder what the doses for children should be. The article mentioned 2,000 units per kilogram of body weight per day, but I assume that is for a fully mature adult body rather than a still developing child's body. Some medications and natural herbs react differently in childrens bodies versus adult bodies - is there any research that shows how children react to different levels of vitamin D?
Can too much vitamin D be poisonous to the body?
Any information you can provide for parents would be extremely helpful.
Thank you.
antibiotics don't affect viruses!
posted by mary on 24 Nov 2010 at 8:07 am
For a physician,he doesn't know that antibiotics have no effect on viruses "their bodies own broad-spectrum antibiotics"??
Also, he doesn't mention that Vitamin D levels are lower in those who live above the equator (northern states) than those who live below and it is thought that it is because of less exposure to UV rays not because it is wintertime. As a health professional myself, I think he needs to review his medical knowledge if he wants to do Vitamin D research or just stick with psychiatry.
viruses and antibiotics

People often don't die from the flu but from the complications. Pneumonia is a bacterial infection and as such can be fought with antibiotics. Low serum levels of Vitamin D will affect your level of immunity
Vitamin D and Asthma
posted by John Santo Florentino on 05 Jan 2011 at 6:44 am
I wonder what a 20-min per day exposure can do to an asthmatic person and one prone to infection which, in turn, triggers asthma. Moreover, I wonder if frequent antibiotic treatment does lower resistance (or immunity) and if daily dose of Vitamin D can be of any help. Thank you. I find the preliminary findings credible as interesting!

It was not mentioned whether the vitamin D was administered with Vitamin A, which is often in the same pills. Halibut oil, and cod liver oil pills, liquid forms, or other type of Vitamin D ?
The vitamin A might also be involved in the protection of tissues.
very informative

Yes, this is a very informative article. I just have not seen reference to the higher potency D 3 which the sun supplies. Vitamin D, sometimes referred to as the type added to milk, etc. is not as effective against disease in general. Thank you
Antibiotic-antimicrobial

I believe he said the antimicrobial peptides, which I think , means anti- microscopic organisms, not necessarily a virus or bacteria.
Read Article Again

@Mary,
Read the article again about antibodies. The ones produced by our own immune system is different than the ones that we get from pharmacy stores. Our own antibiodies (or rather called antimicrobial peptides).
" The UCLA group confirmed two other recent studies, showing that a naturally occurring steroid hormone - a hormone most of us take for granted - was, in effect, a potent antibiotic. Instead of directly killing bacteria and viruses, the steroid hormone under question increases the body's production of a remarkable class of proteins, called antimicrobial peptides. The 200 known antimicrobial peptides directly and rapidly destroy the cell walls of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, including the influenza virus, and play a key role in keeping the lungs free of infection. The steroid hormone that showed these remarkable antibiotic properties was plain old vitamin D. "
Vitamin D Vs A
posted by Lou on 12 Feb 2011 at 6:46 am
I think it used to be higher amount of vitamin D but they significantly reduced vitamin D and maybe made vitamin A higher. For that reason, we avoid cod liver. Simply too much vitamin A and not enough D.
From what I can tell, too much vitamin A can interfere with vitamin D.
Mary is an idiot.

Spanish Flu, Vitamin D and 1916-917 Tamboro Volcano
posted by Barry Armitage on 04 Dec 2011 at 11:14 am
Has there been any connection noticed between "The Year without a Summer" 1916-1917 and the flu epidemic the following year? Vitamin D levels must have been very low for a long period as the sunlight was reduced by all the ash from the Tamboro eruption.
