Where Can I Get Zostavax Vaccine?
posted by Anon on 17 Nov 2006 at 8:20 pm
My physician does not have the new Shingles vaccine due to the fact that is has to be kept frozen and bought in volume.
Where can I get the Zostavax Vaccine in Ohio? He was going to give prescriptions but the pharmacists also expressed their difficulty in availability and storage.

Zostavax Cost/Availability

Finding Zostavax in/around Long Island, New York is difficult, and VERY expensive. Our doctor wrote prescriptions to purchase Zostavax, but we can only find one or two pharmacies willing to purchase it and at a cost to us of around $200. per dose. Is there any way / does anyone know how purchase can be made in this area, and for less cost? Reply, please:

It can't help if you can't find it. Walgreens
Only one Walgreen's in Chicago had a freezer for storing Zostavax. They said it must be administered within 1/2 hour. Under these circumstances this vaccine isn't much good. WalMart doesn't carry it.

If you are on Medicare Part D prescription program, it will cover it. Check with your Part D plan provider. I have AARP plan and it is a Tier two and would cost $28 if you ordered through pharmacy. Part B would cover cost of injection by your primary care. It is hard to find but it is available. Keep checkin with different pharmacies like Wal-mart, Target, Rite-Aid and CVS.
Where To Get Zostavax

My physician wrote an Rx for me to have filled and bring back to her to inject. I called drug stores until I found one that could get it. The chains didn't have it, so I called a locally owned drug store (Elephant Pharmacy in Berkeley, CA) and they got it for me. It was covered by my HMO (Secure Horizons).
Confusion

My doctor didn't know the name of the vaccine other than a vaccine for shingles. The CVS pharmacist had not heard of a vaccine so he called his supplier who told him it had to be shipped in dry ice and then stored in a separate space in a freezer that maintaineda temperature of minus 5 degrees. He went to check his freezer and found he did not have a thermometer to use. He suggested that the doctor could order it directly from a supplier. According to what I have just read it has to be ordered in a large amount and it would cost in the range of $200 per injection. The question remains, does medicare cover the cost and what would the total outlay be for the doctor to have the supply needed. Or, how can a person get the amount needed for two people and get it to the doctor in time to prevent spoilage?

Humans will cover with a $60.00 co pay. However, I have been told by the Merck Pharmacy Locator the closest pharmacy is in Woburn MA, 1/12 hrs away. I have also been told "you really need to know someone to get it" Please comment!!!

You should be able to get Zostavax at nearly any Osco Pharmacy in the Chicagoland area.
Most Oscos now have at least one immunizing pharmacist, and if they do not have a freezer for Zostavax, they can refer you to a pharmacy nearby who has one. I am a pharmacist at Osco in Elmhurst IL We always have several doses available and we will bill Medicare and/or your supplemental insurance. Many insurances pay, otherwise it is about $200 for a shot. Worth it even then if you consider the cost of Shingles.

Our Pharmacy in Los Angeles "Olympia Plaza Pharmacy" carries Zostavax vaccine. You don't need the prescription from your doctor since we have a protocol to administer the vaccine signed by one of the doctors we currenly working with (you will not need to see that doctor, either). Just call our store Monday through friday 9:30-6:00 (323) 937-2590 to schedule a visit. It takes 15 minutes or less to get the entire procedure completed. The cost of vaccine is covered by Medicare part D (prescription benefit) or some private insurance (please bring your insurance info with you). Otherwise the cost is $250. We accept credit cards (except American Express).
Zostavax Availability/Cost

My doctor wants me to have the shingles injection Zostavax, but he does not have it. Zostavax is only available through one local pharmacy, but my insurance compay said that they will only cover it if it is given by my primary care physician. The cost of the injection is $185.
This seems like a cop out by my insurance company. Since my primary care wrote a RX, why should it matter who does the injection as long as they are qualified to do so?
Readily Available And Covered By Insurance In Rochester,ny
posted by arthur on 02 Sept 2007 at 8:10 am
My primary care doctor is very pro active on making the vaccine available.
His office charges $205.00 for the injection and will give it in office.
Our Monroe County Department of Health actually has a weekly clinic just to administer the vaccine. Cost here is $175.00.
My insurance is Blue Cross/ Blue Shield which will cover the cost of the vaccine and the doctor's visit to administer.
I would recommend contacting your primary for advice on what's available in your own community.

Go to http://www.merckvaccines.com
Click on "Merck Adult Vaccination Program" icon (middle-right of page)
When on the MAVP page click on the Vaccination Locator on the page and put in your zip code and choose 50 miles.
Or call: 1-800-261-5579 to speak to a person to find a pharmacy in your area that may be stocking the vaccine. Merck will only be able to give you the name of the pharmacies that are stocking and vaccinating on-site. (depends on your state's laws if they can vaccinate at the pharmacy.)

For those that can't afford this vaccine, check into research studies that may be going on in your area. There is a big one opening in Salt Lake City and I am sure across the country as well
