It is good to be able to get unbiased information without having to take up doctors time whilst at the surgery & in a basic language one the general public can understand.

Quick Note

posted by A Smith on 04 Jan 2011 at 11:54 am

I would just like to point out that your article states that antibiotics only attack

"only bacteria - they do not attack other organisms, such as fungi or viruses"

This is an error. As a biochemistry student I would like to make readers aware of the fact that antibiotics target bacteria AND FUNGI (although not viruses).

Thankyou.

correct me if I am wrong

posted by Anh on 05 Jan 2011 at 8:53 pm

Hi,

I was told that antibiotics have many side effects, especially for children. I come from a country where the environment is badly polluted hence my baby has to take antibiotics frequently (like once every 2 months). He always got infected with his nose, throat, eyes. I am desperate because I don't know what's gonna happen with my son's body when he has to take lots of antibiotics like this?

Could anybody explain what kinds of side effects of antibiotics???

Thanks a lot.

3) How do the differences in cell wall structure relate to the type of antibiotic used to fight infections?

Similar experience to Anh's

posted by A parent on 09 Jan 2011 at 5:03 am

Your child will be fine. Taking antibiotics in such environment is the right thing to do. I have two kids, one grew up with heavy antibiotics in an environement similar to what you describe, and another in North America who was given no antibiotics whatsoever and had to suffer through a couple of infections (unneccesarily if I may add). Both are strong in their twenties now.

Candida

posted by Gary on 25 Jan 2011 at 3:24 am

I think you should of mentioned how quite how dangerous the side-effects are. Espeically when they cause a candida over growth ans also how anti-biotics would not be needed of we supported the immune system with proper diet and natural supliments.

Time to Re-Think Antibiotics?

posted by Kevin on 29 Jan 2011 at 11:03 am

Scientists have found new evidence bacteria and vaccines respond rapidly to evolve resistance to new antibiotics and vaccines. A report in ScienceDaily.com reported Friday 01/28/2011. We need to fight viruses and bacteria more using the body's immune system that does not promote the mutation of germs. I've taken antibiotics before and they have worked but at what cost? I've started using UV-Aid a more natural way to fight germs. The company that makes it claims the body uses the energy from the sun to photo-oxidize the melanin in our skin producing hydrogen peroxide that in turn kills invading bacteria and viruses. I've been using it religiously for the last couple years. I used to get multiple colds every winter, so far I have have only one mild one in the past two years. I haven't heard of any better alternatives to the run- away use of antibiotics.

Not trying to be a jerk but if you live in an area thats high in pollution or what not and your worried about your kid why not just move away from that area and not have to worry about the drugs your child has to take

Correct Me If I'm Wrong Reply

To A parent: Thank you very much. That's such a good news to me.
TO Blaggh: You are right! That's perfect solution for my son's problem and ease my pain (it's really painful when i see my son tired with high temperature and becoming thiner after every sickness). But it's polluted everywhere in my country. Areas that are less polluted are remote areas where living condition is worse, no good hospital, no good school... Life is not easy as always.

antibiotics

posted by samantha on 09 Mar 2011 at 6:16 pm

Antibiotics target bacteria and fungi, not viruses therefore they will not affect the common cold virus. if your sore throat is caused by bacteria then antibiotics will certainly help, if not, your nurse is wasting your money. Resistance is caused by only taking part courses of antibiotics allowing survival of the fittest in the remaining bacteria. symptoms may disappear but rest assured, not all of the bacteria will have.

how does it happen?

posted by steve on 20 Mar 2011 at 6:59 pm

good article, but was also hoping to have way the body uses antibiotics (or the way that antibiotics deliver themselves) explained as well.
To put it simply- you take an antibiotic (say orally) but what happens then and how does it happen?

Do antibiotics temporarily weaken the immune system ? i.e. can antibiotics cause secondary effects such as shingles to suddenly erupt?
