PCS Patient

posted by Knut Norem on 20 Jun 2007 at 11:37 pm

Your article has been very interesting reading. My son has been hit by severe PCS symptoms lasting for 3 months without any treatment, before reading this article. After reading it he has been involved in light excercises and has shown very good progress.

I should also mention that we used homopatic medicin for concussion symptoms starting in the same period. After above combination the day to day headache was removed within weeks after starting this process.

Going through this PCS currently

posted by CAROL BRADY on 14 Dec 2010 at 8:02 pm

This article has been very helpful. I suffered my head concussion that lasted for a week the last week of October. It's been about 7 weeks and I've been diagnosed w/ PCS. Is there someone in the Cincinnati, Ohio area or Northern KY that is experienced with these exercises that could help me? The last two months have been an extreme challenge dealing with this condition while going back to college at age 44. Any information you can provide me would be appreciated. Thank you, in advance, for your help. C.Brady

risky activities

if I had a TBI and they found I had a previous TBI when nobody knows when, will I still be allowed to horseback ride as long as I wear a helmet? Is the concern with PCS a repeat head injury or the severity of the repeat head injury? The first TBI had sub dural bleeding bleeding from an unknown cause but the second was from falling off a horse without a helmet and sustaining a subarachnoid bleed and i lost my spleen. I had my last injury 1.5 yrs ago and I am having concentration, memory and repetitive symptoms. neuro/psy testing pending.

PCS/TBI

posted by Ann on 02 Jan 2011 at 6:14 pm

My son received multiple concussions with a TBI on 9/16. He had been sleeping for about 16 hours per day. Was on Amitriptyline, B6 (50mg) and SloMag. On 12/15 he began having seizures and now sleeps even more. They have tapered him off the Amitriptyline and discontinued the SloMag and we are trying to do 15 minute slow walks each day. Some days he is waking with severe and burning headaches. We are trying to get in to see a different neurologist for a second opinion as he had a seizure in front of the current one and was not even examined during that visit. Have had MRI, MRA's but were fragmented due to braces and also have had short EEG's. Trying to push fluids when awake. Would appreciate and welcome any advice as we are looking at four months and have lost an entire semester of school and quality of life for an amazing son.

PCS/Whiplash

posted by Laura on 23 Jan 2011 at 5:34 pm

Ann my son also had an injury in Sept. 10. It took until the end of Dec. for them to diagnose him with PCS and whiplash. We also had MRI's, an EMG, CT, X-rays all came back normal. He was practicing football and got hit and his head snapped back. The pain began in his neck and radiated down his spine and to his head. He has constant pain from the top of his head to the bottom of his spine. Sometimes it's so bad he has blurred vision, memory loss and cannot concentrate. He also has not been to school since Thanksgiving. I can understand the pain and heartbreak you're going through. It is a terrible thing to see your child like this and not be able to do anything to help them. Nothing they have given my son for the pain has worked to ease it. They say PT, exercise, water, therapy and time will heal it. It's been almost 5 months.

It is just too morose to stand through and spot my daughter hardship to cope with the discrimination ringing! That isn't the worst allowing, as she struggles to wake up b stand up c mount to sleep her general health seems to be getting worse. It appears that as she is so irratable and perturbed, she can't sleep on long and nowdays seems to pick up virtually every sickness that is doing the rounds. My theory is that this be resulting from the tinnitus? I am searching pro a tinnitus treatment perfect now.

PCS lasting over 10 years

posted by Bonnie on 21 Sept 2011 at 7:29 am

My son had several snowboard related concussions. He was wearing a helmet each time. It has been over 10 years that he has had excrutiating pain, feels like a vice is pressing on both sides of his head, stabbing pains in his head, sees picsels, among other symptoms. We have been to every kind of doctor imaginable and of course, they always say they can help, but in the end say there's nothing they can do.
He is totally fed up with drugs and refuses to take anymore.

He tries to work everyday but sometimes it's impossible. He is becoming quite depressed and is not sure what his purpose in life is supposed to be. After reading about this exercise program I am going to suggest it to him although he will be reluctant because he thinks it will be another unsuccessful attempt. Anna, I would like to hear more about your son and if he has tried this program with success.

PCS Suffering Over A Year Now

posted by Carolyne Cluett on 20 Oct 2011 at 12:10 pm

I had my head injury Sept 11/10. I have not had my life now for over a year and either has my family because of it. I am 51 years old and female. The doctor had me on Tramadol and Gabapentin for at least 6 months now with no changes. They have also tried anti-depressants and it just makes me go into a more depressed state. I have bad headaches 24/7. The last doctor I saw, said I would always be like this and never get better. I can't work or associate with friends or family because I can't handle more than a 2 person conversation. I am always at home. I went searching on line to see if I could find anyway to help myself and I read your article and I'm hoping now that there just might be light at the end of this long dark tunnel I've been in...

pcs&memory loss

posted by m on 01 Nov 2011 at 5:04 pm

I come from a different part of the world but people have the same problems my teen age son fell on his head after playing foot ball their was water on the floor he slipped that's what we were told , he can not remember, he was unconscious for some time, anyway 3 weeks later he still has memory loss the past 6 months of his live are whipped out and some significant old memories he also became short tempered other wise he is OK ,I have other kids but ironically he was the best at school and sports and the one with the least problems,on the day of the accident he was taken to an emergency did CT it was normal but for 48 hours had speech ,balance problems
then I took him 3 days later to a specialist that did an MRI and EKG that was normal and told him to go back to school and sports that i was being over proactive I was not convinced by this Doctor I took his scans to another spicilest and called two more neurologist friends and then took him to another t that is the head of the department that told my son that he should not play sports or computer games and take it easy.and told us to wait and see, then repeat MRI and do a cognitive test but we are still working on getting appointments

but because of the first Doctor my son continued to work out at home and go to school even tho he was tiered and being teased about his memory,he just stopped conduct sports ,he said he dose not want to lose his fitness or fall back in school, the first week I was so upset and angry and honestly my faith was being tested the second week I tried several different things : Reiki that my son referred to as mambo jumbo but I think it did help because after the first session he remembered his phone's pass word , Reflexology I did it my self by reading from a book , homeopathy cant say it helped but i think i did not get the best practitioner because they are not allowed to practice where we live, prayer I did a lot of that ,I am Muslim and their are certain versus that one reads from the Quran for heeling ,I think even if you are not Muslim one can dawn load them and listen (Alfatiha ,Alnass,AlFalaq,AlSamed, and other ) and read them in water so the water becomes blessed,

Then I got glasses from a chiropractor was told they could help stimulate the Brian , their is information about them on the net being used for ADD

I was told by a Doctor friend that her husband got a stork and was told he had no hope of recovery but she took him to centers in Germany that used hyperbaric oxygen and that he improved significantly

the doctor I saw here told me their is no medical prove that Oxygen works for Brain trauma it is only available in big government hospitals and used for burns.I will try to push this,a friend also recomended Neorofeed back but thats not avalable here , a nother option is using CDs that work on sinicing the brian ,for the the last week I have not done much I lost momentom.

Any way that's what I have been doing .Medically nothing much to do.

I wish you all the best

Looking for help

posted by VFlynn on 22 Nov 2011 at 8:00 am

I share a similar experience with many of the contributors. My son suffered a concussion 2 years ago during high school football. It's been a difficult road for him since. He's now in community college but has a diffucult time focusing and concentrating. No headaches but definate signs of depression. How do we diagnose PCS from nornal teenage adolecence and how to treat this. I appreciate anyone who can give some direction.

I have been boxing for 13 years and have suffered my first major concussion

posted by Jackie Lachapelle on 21 Apr 2012 at 4:21 am

I have been boxing for 13 years and have suffered my first major concussion. It has been 7 months and I still have headaches, pressure build up, light/noise sensitivity, sleep disruptions, dizzy spells, nausea, motion sickness, and general fatigue that is continually there. I was an elite athlete for the last 15 years of my life competing for many national teams. I have been essentially dormant, recently trying return to play protocols with no success. Would someone please tell me anything that helped them get better. Could someone also send me a basic exercise protocol (like described in the UofB article).

Post-Concussion Syndrome for more than a year

posted by Tak Sellers on 04 May 2012 at 4:14 pm

Hi, I have had what I believe is PCS. I am a motocross racer who has suffered several concussion over the course of my life. But, Back in February of 2011 (my Senior year in high school) My life changed. Up to this period I had received 4 concussions (one leaving me unconscious and basically not knowing who or where i was for 3 days) but in february of last year I was at a race and went down receiving what i believe was the first of two concussions in two days. The following day was a second race. I wasn't feeling right, but continued on with the race. Once again, I went down again. This time I blacked out for a few seconds, but when i came back to, everything was different. Everything looked different. As if the the colors of the world had lost their vibrancy. It felt a lot like i went to sleep and woke up in a dream and have been in this dream ever since. It has been almost 1 year and 4 months since the incident and i still feel the same. My symptoms consist of: Memory loss, inability to focus, Light sensitivity, Sound sensitivity, Lack of drive, Slur words, Depression, Dizzy spells, Confusion, Light headedness, Extremely irritable, inability to hold a conversation, Constantly space out, Always have the feeling of being cross-eyed, trouble sleeping, anxiety (especially in public places like stores resturaunts etc.) I finished out my senior year with help from my girlfriend on all of my work, I mostly slept in class ( not like me at all) prior to, I had plans of college, moving out and living in the big city of Austin, Tx. Now, I am still living at home, cannot work because of all my symptoms, especially the anxiety. I have no idea what to do or where to go for help. I am basically on my own. my parents won't help because they don't believe me. All i want to do is start my life.
