Having Bronchitis
posted by Angela on 30 May 2008 at 11:02 amI had bronchitis for a whole week before I went to the doctor. I thought it was heartburn because it I felt a similar burning sensation in the chest. When the doctor listened to my lungs she jut shook her head and the "yes" motion and said I had bronchitis. I was in Memphis, TN (orginally from Tallahassee, FL) and I was around my whole family for a week!! I also went to work for a day when I got back!! I put all those people in danger of my virus. I just have a message out there for everyone, don't self-diagnose.........EVER.

It was a surprising moment when the doctor stated I had bronchitis..I was so speechless and astonished!! I was never symptomed with any disease, and when I heard that I was diagnosed with bronchitis, I couldn't believe it! At first, I got a a sore throat..the usual symptom of the cold/flu, then cough, congestion, etc. Although it seemed like a normal cold, it lasted for a very long time! THREE WEEKS to be exact! (few more days for it to have become FOUR) My dad and I knew this was not an average cold, thus we visited the doctor.
After the tests, he went straight to the point-I had bronchitis. For three weeks, almost four, I was at school! I could have gave this to them!! I could have seriously put everyone at risk! I"m very lucky I have manners when I'm sick, if not..it might not have resulted in a happy ending. I regret now that I should have checked in with my doc earlier.. Just as the previous commenter and my father said, know your own body. If something wrong occurs with your body, even if it's small, make sure to find out what exactly it is! before it's too late!
Clarifying things

I think some of the other comments here show a lack of understanding of what bronchitis is, so I think I'll make one thing clear: bronchitis itself is not contagious. You cannot give another person bronchitis. The virus and bacteria that can cause bronchitis are contagious, but those are simple cold viruses; anyone who caught your illness would catch it as a mere cold and not necessarily as an infection.
That isn't to say you shouldn't wash your hands and cover your mouth, but there's no need to act as though you could have been spreading some horrible disease. It is, at its core, the common cold.
That said, I've been suffering from a case of bronchitis for six and a half weeks now, and it's been pretty terrible. Antibiotics haven't worked, and the doctors tell me all I can do is wait it out. It's likely that my asthma and my busy schedule have made it hard for my body to recover quickly. I've doubled my asthma medication, but that was a month ago. I'm pretty much at my wit's end with this, but there's really nothing I can do but wait it out.
Bronchitis sucks!

Jess I totally agree with what you were saying in the first bit. Everyone I know thinks they can catch it! So silly of them! In 2 days time my bronchitis has been around for 8 weeks! Thats right, 2 loooooooong months!! :( 2 visits to my doctor, 3 visits to hospital for my 4th set of antibiotics and a partridge in a pear tree! Lol, god knows what my xray and blood tests are gonna come back as! Just hope it goes!

Bronchitis Sufferer

Hey guys! Just thought I would share my story. I originally thought I had a cold for the first week or two then it felt like it moved into my chest because my cough was so bad I thought I was going to cough up a lung! But after suffering for another week I gave in and went to the doctor who told me it was bronchitis. I had no idea that the weight i was feeling on my chest was a symptom of bronchitis. I just thought it hurt because I coughed so much. So if I can suggest anything please don't wait as long as I did to go to the doctor. Go as soon as you can, you'll be glad you did!

Some suggestions
posted by Eric on 12 Mar 2011 at 3:56 am
As a long-term sufferer from bronchitis, first let me offer my sympathy to all out there who also have this very debilitating illness. Over the years, I have come to discover that there are certain do's and dont's for victims. My first suggestion would be, avoid, where possible, all processed meats, bacon, corned beef, ham etc. It is not the meat that is the problem, but the preservative used in the preparation, namely sodium nitrite, which can impact on lung function (try Googling for this). I would also advise sufferers to eliminate all dairy products where feasible, as the consumption of these can also increase the formation of mucus in the lungs.
Oh! and don't smoke! I did for 15 years, and the legacy was bronchitis.
When I have an attack, which is pretty rare these days, thank goodness, I take a couple of codeine/paracetamol tablets, a warm drink, and stay in bed for a few hours. I then usually feel much better. I also take 10,000 IUs of vitamin D3 every day, and this has certainly helped.
Sorry that I cannot offer any actual cure, but hopefully this post might help someone.
Best of luck.
Eric

About 6 yrs ago I had bronchitis & it turned into pneumonia which landed me in a hospital for 9 days. After that stay, I had a horrible cough that would not go away. Went to a lung specialist and was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease - Pulmonary fibrosis. Look it up on the internet - it's not pretty and it doesn't go away as it's a scarring of the lungs. If anyone on this site has had broncitis for long - have this checked out as it can get worse. I don't want to scare you - just be cautious and talk w/ur dr about it.
PROLONGED BRONCHITIS
posted by JUMBO MTOMBOLOKA on 26 Aug 2011 at 5:33 am
I've been coughing for almost a year now! Isaw a Doctor who gave me some general medicines, unfortunately it did not work. He sent me for the X-RAY thinking it might a TB but it worked out not. He gave me some medicines just to prove that really it wasn't TB. So it came out that it wasn't. The final conclusion was that I had bronchitis and there is no medicine to cure it. I was given medicines like Pitron, Amnophilyne, Predisolene and other cough syrups but nothing changed apart from having loss of appetite.
It is true that it is not contagious otherwise my familly could have been affected heavily.
Is there any further research to bring this Bronchitis to a manageable level? It is very irritating to be coughing everywhere and frequently.....

Hayfever tablets?
posted by Jenny on 22 Nov 2011 at 3:23 am
I was wondering if as it is an inflamatory response if hayfever and anti-allergy pills would help - I have allergic asthma and it seems to help for that when I can't get away from the irritants and i'm considering getting a mask to wear when I have to go out to stop me breathing in the smoke and perfumes... Just thought i'd mention it ins case it might help xx
Can mold or allergies cause bronchitis?
posted by Feather on 30 Nov 2011 at 5:51 pm
I have had bronchitis twice this year. First time was around new years (after a very large snow storm) and now again in Nov. I've been sick for two weeks and diagnosed with bronchitis (after having a viral infection). My question is: can mold or an allergy also be a factor in getting bronchitis? I work in a building that constantly has a leaky roof (actually water pouring down) after rain or snow melting and has a constant smell of mold/mildew. I have an allergy to mold and have problems breathing while at work. Thoughts...
am I crazy to feel this may be the cause or helping me get sick?
Thanks

"Bronchitis is caused by viruses, bacteria, and other particles that irritate the bronchial tubes" so yes Allergies can cause Bronchitis - if you are struggling to breathe at work perhaps using a face mask would help if you are unable to change jobs?

I get bronchitis at least once a year. I have asthma and smoke cigarettes so that may be the answer. Each time is just as bad as the last. Not being able to breathe is the worst feeling there is. I seem to always end up with walking pneumonia from it as well. I also work with mold and asbestos at my work. Maybe i need a new career a new habbit and some new lungs :(
Will it ever end :(

I currently have bronchitis. I was advised to drink lots of hot liquids -- even boiled wine -- in order to sweat out the viral/bacterial culprit.
Does anyone know if this works?

I came down with a hard cold right at the end of January and every time I cough I see mucus. It has lightened up now, after a constant month of coughing. Everyone says if it's tougher than the average cold to go to the doctor. I have just one problem. I have no medical insurance and no money. I can't pay even if I was forced to go to the doctor. I don't have any money.

Chronic bronchitis is has no treatment, however it is better to follow the instructions of a doctor. very many people have i ever seen suffer chronic bronchitis but have lived longer but were diagnosed having chronic bronchitis. However, great thanks to the publisher. learning to take part within the susceptible communities.
