Crohn's Stem Cell In The U.S.

posted by jeannie trujillo on 15 May 2009 at 12:17 pm

I suffer from severe Crohn's disease and have had many surgeries. I am 28 years old but was diagnosed at 10 years old. I was hoping to get guidance on the hospital/clinics that have been successful in stem cell treatment. I'm hoping to get some more information to educate myself on the method. I was just told I need another surgery which would leave me w/ a colostomy bag. I just want to explore the option of having an opinion regarding stem cell treatment. Thank you so much in advance!! Here is the google map of it, I think, maybe you could get a group together and get this cure figured out for theses poor suffering people. CCFA and/or Mayo clinic should be doing it here, right?

I am wondering if this therapy is being done in the United States. My nephew is in very bad shape and would be agreeable to any treatment. Please advise me of any information you have.

Stem cell therapy for crohns

posted by Hemant Pangtey on 24 Nov 2011 at 10:40 pm

Dear Moderator
My partner has been suffering from Crohns disease since last 10 years and has already undergone 8 operations for the frequent strictures she had.Since the quality of treatment available in Armenia is not standardized the only options the doctors offer is surgery.
With all the resection done so far no more is possible without colostomy.
I am a medical doctor working with an humanitarian INGO in a remote place with modest means and have supported with the all finances I could spare. She is currently in Germany with the help of Red cross and not sure what treatment is being planned for her.
My query is - how much it will cost for stem cell therapy for her as she seems to be the ideal candidate for her and how long she will need to stay in the hospital.
Thanks in advance.

I had peritonitis and went into anaphylactic shock

posted by Nancy on 25 Dec 2011 at 12:50 pm

I am so glad to be alive today! On 12/8/11 I went into the hospital to have a stricture removed; on 12/10/11, I had emergency surgery to save my life; I had peritonitis and went into anaphylactic shock. After 5 days in ICU and another 4 days in the hopital, I was released 12/19/11. PLEASE HELP! I am terrified of 'the next time'. I've had Crohn's for 30 years and it is most definitely getting worse. Are there any doctors here in the western US that can help me?

Very dangerous

posted by Lisa Cote on 21 Feb 2012 at 3:24 pm

I have heard about this stem cell treatment before at the IBD conference here in Seattle, and it was described as a very dangerous procedure that is only being used in cases where it is the only hope for surviving. From what I understand, the reason is that they have to basically strip and re-set your entire immune system, which leaves those who undergo this treatment extremely vulnerable to deadly infections. The article hints at this by stating the treatment is only given to those who do not respond to other therapies, but I think it the point should be clarified further so as not to be misleading--this is not yet a safe treatment for a large portion of us with IBD. I have had Crohn's for twenty years now and am doing well currently on Humira and Imuran. I feel blessed to have not required surgery thus far, knock on wood.
