My opinion on the French red bull ban
posted by steve s on 07 Apr 2004 at 8:02 amI am a college student i drink red bull all the time to keep up and do work. It really does give you a nice little boost, and i like the taste. Ive read alot about taurine and the glucuronolactone. All Ive found about taurine is that it helps to reduce the risk of some cardiovascular diseases and that it may help in epilepsy...and taruine is a natural amino acid, and that it is not from bulls balls or anything-it is synthetically made in a lab. I highly doubt that the amount of caffeine in a redbull could kill you...i read on one site that there are 80 mg of caffeine in redbull and that it would take 125 cans ingested in a very short time to be an overdose. Coffee can contain 80-180 mg of caffeine, but nobody bans coffee. I dont think it is right that the french can ban redbull with no proof of adverse affects; they basically are relying on some scientist's (who probably is jealous he didnt invent redbull and get rich) hunch that it could be harmful. my girlfriend said she heard that it causes cancer. i read about that...supposedly glucuronolatctone was a vetnam war chemical that was banned in the us because it causes brain tumors. another rumor with no basis. anyway i recommend redbull to anyone over coffee-it tastes better and from what ive seen taurine is good for you-my dad died of heart disease so if taurine helps prevent it then its a double bonus for me! plus it gives you wiiiiiiiings!!!!!!

Red Bull helps
posted by Amy Holshouser on 25 Sept 2004 at 9:28 pm
Only recently have I found this product, Red Bull. Ever since I have found it I was interested in doing a lot of research on it. It turns out that I was able to do a paper on it in school and so I have been looking up and down on the internet for information on all of the ingredients. Everything that I have found so far that has facts, proof, and tests say that everything in Red Bull is healthy and that it truly does help the body. The only times I see anything negative about the drink, is when I see "suspicions." None of the "suspicions" that I see have been proven, and furthermore only remain "suspicions."
Everything that I have read about and have first handedly experienced with Red Bull Energy Drink are positive and reassuring that the drink really does help.
I drink anywhere from 4-5 cans a day during the weekdays, because I need that extra boost of energy a lot. It has been proven (check out this site to see http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/energy%20drink ) that you cannot become biologically addicted to energy drinks.
I believe that countries, such as France, need to do some research on the drink and find that it is not what they suspect and then start drinking and living.
And if you do more research on this drink, you will find that the majority of people that they "suspect" die from this drink were drinking alcohol too.
Maybe if they'd stop drinking and start living, they wouldn't have to worry so much.
Thank you.
My Comments About Red Bull

Hi, I have a few comments to make wrt the red bull energy drink. I am a male 34 year old and am 5 foot 10 inches and 180 pounds. I am active and in very good shape. I was out clubbing this past weekend in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and was drinking a fair amount of alcoholic beverages. My tolerance level is very high for alcohol however after having my very first red bull and vodka ever, I collapsed less than 30 mins thereafter in the middle of the dance floor and my buddies had to pick me up and carry me home. I then went to sleep and awoke the next morning scratching my head as to why the heck it had happened. My first thoughts were that someone had poisoned me and then I decided to google red bull and came across several articles surmising the same types of occurrences. My first experience with the red bull beverage was definitely a scary one and I will no longer ever go near this drink and will tell everyone I know of same.

Maybe it's the vodka you should be thinking about, not the Red Bull!

Maybe it's something with mixing the red bull with alcohol, kinda how you're not supposed to mix medicine with alcohol =)

I’m a pediab driver in New York City. I use Red bull drink while working and I found it very interesting drink. Many pedicab drivers use it and love it and despite all the efforts we use to do our jobs I didn’t see any one complaining or saying anything bad about it.
Just put in mind and think about it that pedicab drivers in New York pedal a minimum of 8 hours a day for at least five days a week. It really helped me a lot when I’m tired and especially summer time.
Just think about it that we sometimes pedal “Non Stop” for 5 hours at least from Wednesday to Friday from 3PM to 9PM. When I say Non Stop it’s Non Stop and we are proud to do it and we use all kinds of food and drinks to do our job and Red bull drink is one in the list. If you need more detail about what is a Pedicab athlete just let me know.

My own experiences with redbull

The first time I had ever drank redbull was at a party. After mixed drinks with redbull and alcohol, my heart tightened up and I had difficulty breathing. In the three days since then, I have been in the ER twice and have not had a full breath in days. I cannot say whether it was the alcohol, the redbull or a combination of the two - but for anyone thinking of drinking these two combined, please learn from me and others on here and think before you drink.

I go thru spurts of drinking red bulls. I am prone to caffeine headaches so I always use caution on how much I drink. I have had red bulls while walking on my treadmill to keep me going, but I also make sure I drink plenty of water at the same time. As for mixing with alcohol I've never tried with red bull, but have drunk sparks which is energy drink and alcohol in one, haven't had problems. I think the key is moderation. Everything in life should be done in moderation. Too much of anything in life seems to kill you.

Just some food for thought. You should not mix red bulls with vodka, think about red bulls are an upper and vodka is a depressant. So, maybe that is why you guys are having crazy effects! I drink at least 2 red bulls a day and love it!
I live on energy drinks

I've been drinking redbull and other energy drinks for about 15 years, it’s all I drink apart from coffee. Redbull works best because of the sugars it contains, cheap drinks contain plain sugar that is not as effective.. and it makes you fat!. The sugars in redbull need less work to break them down and you get the energy quicker and more effectively. I drink about 4 redbulls a day, mainly because of cost, i'll drink up to 3 ltrs of kick (Tesco cheapy) a day in the summer. In my 20's I managed 1 hr sleep a night, now I have about 5 at age 39. Boring fact Maggie Thatcher ran the country on 1 hrs sleep a night .. like it didn't show ;)
Possible side effect

I'm 17, 5'11" and ~170 lbs. I consume an average of 4 energy drinks a day.
Right now I'm suffering from caffeine addiction, if I don’t drink a caffeinated beverage in the morning and at certain times of the day I developed an intense headache, dizziness, and sometimes nausea. I drink Bawls and monster more so than red bull (because of cost) and have recently developed strange symptoms that I can't find answers to.
After about two years of this lifestyle (4 cans a day and ~4 hours of sleep a night) I have developed breathing problems, I now find it difficult to breathe at a consistent rate, as if someone where sitting on my chest all the time. My pulse is up from the 40 that it used to be to ~75. I have googled extensively without finding an answer that can explain the problems I'm having. Perhaps someone who has done extensive research on energy drinks has come across a case like mine? Could this simply be fatigue?

Remember that the drink you are having has Taurine as well as caffeine. It is the Taurine that perks you up.
Your symptoms sound to me like someone who is not getting enough sleep. You could also have an allergy (which may have developed recently) to some of the ingredients in your energy drink.
I would try three weeks with just water for drinking.

Red Bull and Paranoia
posted by John Doe on 09 May 2006 at 11:27 am
I was at a dance club over the weekend and drank at least 10 Red Bulls. Half were mixed with Vodka and the other half were just Red Bull. For the next 2 days I have developed intense paranoia, to the extent that I thought the police were following me for 2 days and that everybody was looking at me because I had been on TV. I've only had this feeling once in my life which was last month. The common thread was mass consumption of Red Bull. I am 30 years old and have never had any similar experiences, even when driking very heavily. I really think it is related to the Red Bull. Can anyone point me to any sites for further research into this?

Yes, definitely paranoia. I had it and it was like I was a complete alien. Scary scary thing.. I drank another drink called Monster, I think. It was a red and black can. It could have ruined my marriage if that continued.. very scary.

I drink a lot of red bull around exam time because I don't like coffee, and recently have started having it most mornings for a bit of a kick. iI've never had symptoms before. But I started feeling a bit sick, but i won't actually be sick, just the feeling.
My advice to people is cut down how much you have. I "came off the redbull" about 3 cans a day for 4 weeks constant a while a go and i felt like UTTER CRAP for a whole week.... tired, generally miserable. BUT.... you get over it, and eating more fruit and veg, and walking more and going to bed earlier.... works better. (but make sure you spend that week locked in your bedroom!!!)
I still have red bulls occassionly, but i would reccommened cutting down to at the most 2 cans a day.
people who are not used to red bull..... i can understand how it can have that effect. it like sum people are REALLY crap with alcohol... weaklings. whereas i can drink a whole bottle of absinthe and still be alive!

I also had a very scary experience. I was so paranoid I thought I was going insane. I also threw up all night and next day. I had a horrible headache. I thought I had been drugged. I wound up in the emergency and was treated for dehydration. The doctors couldn't figure out what had made me so ill. I had only 2 mixed drinks that night-hardly any alcohol. They could only guess that I had a reaction to the ingredients in Red Bull.

All you people complaining about drinking red bull while you're out clubbing and then feeling like crap or becoming ill should wake up to yourselves.
You may as well mix painkillers with every drink you have all night because its going to have the same effect on you.
Nothing wrong with Redbull the can says 2 cans max per day so if you go drinking 6 cans a day everyday and then wonder why you start having health issues you're an idiot.

Red Bull - Is It Safe?
posted by Ian on 16 Oct 2006 at 8:50 am
I am an occasional red bull drinker, I live in France so I can't by it here. The first time I tried this drink I was out clubbing after work and had a long drive back and wasn’t drinking. Being tired from work I thought id try drinking this to stay motivated, I had between 10 & 15 cans that night ignorant to any health warnings. I was fine, except that I found it hard to sleep almost shaking from all the caffeine and stuff, woke up with damp sheets from all the sweating I did in the night. All symptoms you can get from drinking to much coffee.
As for paranoia I some times get nevus or a kind of light paranoia without red bull the night after drinking heavily and dancing hard, I put this down to the stress I put my body threw whilst clubbing, the amount of alcohol, the physical effort of dancing, the loud noises and flashing lights. Just think what these stimulants would do to an epileptic. mixmag recently published an article called “what happens to your body in a nightclub?” issue October 2006.
These drinks speed up your metabolism some people go hyper with sugar, it could even kill a diabetic but sugar isn’t considered dangerous. There are definitely people who will have different effects from caffeine and the other stimulants in this drink, So? people are allergic to nuts. “bane the nuts!”there has got to be a certain number of deaths just google nut deaths.
As for the boy who died playing basket ball after drinking red bull. One of my friends who had practised French boxing since a young age died of a heart failure during a demo (he hadn’t drank any form of energy drink) and in France you are required to have a health check every year to practice any sport in a club. So for me it is no reason to suspect that red bull might be linked to the young basketball players death other than human curiosity.
I sometimes take a vitamin pill or two if I am going clubbing till morning, I find they help me if I drink too much I don’t get a headache and uncontrollable spinning and I haven’t “blacked” out since ( carried on functioning whilst having no recollection what so ever) and I always have a bottle of water buy my bed.
Those who have withdraw headaches from daily use a lot of stimulants even just sugar or fast food, you should watch “super size me” a documentary where Morgan Spurlock eats only Mac Donald’s for 30 days. He gets headaches from sugar withdraw from the food.
So if you have never tried red bull you are worried about the effects just try 1 can during the day and go from that, if you are going to drink it everyday expect the possibility of side effects, I recommend fruit juice or water as a principle drink and just eat healthy.
Any way how can you ban red bull yet allow smoking. I believe the French banned it for political reasons not health
Red Bull Makes Me Aggressive
posted by Tony Borroughs on 16 Oct 2006 at 1:19 pm
Whenever I have just one red bull I become very aggressive. Last year I broke a guy's leg in a fit of rage because he was laughing in a restaurant - he was at another table and did not even know me.
Now, I never touch the stuff.

Red Bull Problems? Erm

Rite, dvrb (double vodka red bull) is my fav clubbing drink ever! I canna really say how many I have on a regular nite out... probably between 4-8 and I have no trouble wotsoever with it.
Vodka gets me drank, red bull keeps me on my toes and dancing til 3am. I always sleep like a rok, never had any side affects from it at all ( I am one of those few lucky pipul that dont suffer from hangouvers mind). I have read loads of mixed reveiws on red bull, and particularly vodka redbull but really canna found any reason to suggest that its dangerous. Just like someone sayd before me, ppl just react differently to it according to how their bodyes are put together I guess. The only problem with the redbull is that I hafeta go to the gym to stop me from looking pregnant :D
Red Bull Has Done Your Spelling No Good

After reading Miki's letter, I congratulate her on laboring under the illusion that her Red Bull cocktails have done her no harm.
However, her spelling and punctuation are that of a six-year-old. Was this caused by all those Red Bulls and vodka?
Red Bull, France And Spelling
posted by Dr. William Davis on 03 Apr 2007 at 9:02 am
1. There is no scientific evidence that Red Bull or other energy drinks are harmful. The only way one can die from Red Bull is to fall into a vat of the stuff and drown.
Those who report personal adverse experiences need to consider other causes, perhaps allergies to something in the area or to the more likely explanation that someone else put another substance in their drink.
2. France has been stupid about economics and world events for decades. No one should be surprised that they would adopt wildly illogic bans on safe foods. This is just another reason to stay away.
3. Dr. Guilford. Please note that the younger generation adopts abbreviated spelling and punctuation frequently in internet communication and cell phone text messaging. I think it is both to save time and to demonstrate individuality. I have had to learn it to communicate with my daughters who are in advanced graduate programs at prestigious universities. At least Mikki capitalized the word "I" and the first word of sentences. Often they don't do that. Your comments were unwarranted and sancitmonious, showing only your own ignorance. You owe Mikki an apology.
Thank God It Is Banned In France

I am an American citizen and have lived in France for the last 13 years.
Thank God Red Bull is banned here. I have three teenage kids and they are much healthier than any kids I come across in the USA when on vacation.
France's life expectancy is 8.3 years longer than in the USA, they have universal free healthcare, excellent food, a great family life, brilliant state schools, fantastic public transportation - including some of the best trains in the world.
I would not believe all that American anti-French propaganda if I were you.
