Thank you for a very clear and descriptive answer to my question, "What is arthritis?" Having just gone through the past couple of years of pain and finally a diagnosis, your article gave me a clearer picture of what I am dealing with.

Arthritis - I cannot have any painkillers

posted by Glennis on 20 July 2010 at 9:25 am

I have both RA and OA and have yet to see an article that has both at the same time in it.

Would love some advice because . Am allergic to salicylates and can just have half a paraceutomal at one time.

It is horrid. I do also have a diet of no wheat, gluten [coeliac] and no dairy foods etc.

I am now 68 and do tai chi twice a week [teach it] and also massage etc

any other help welcome. I do know of others who have both and I also have osteoporosis. we believe strongly as I was ill for 50 years before being diagnosed and my immune system is in overdrive.

Arthritis and Diet/Nutrition

posted by J. McGhee on 10 Feb 2011 at 12:33 pm

The first appearance of arthritis for me occurred after my wife gave birth to twins when I was aged 35. Because one twin wakes up crying in the middle of the night and causes the other twin to awake crying, we both had to do night-time feedings. This caused me to increase my use of caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea, hot chocolate) in order to be alert at work. I soon developed arthritic pains seemingly in all the joints of my body and was unable to lie down without painful stress to joints.

Later, I experienced chest pains and was taken to the hospital from my work site. I was diagnosed with rapid and irregular heart beat and was put in the cardiac care unit. Being unable to move around, read or watch TV, I went over in my mind the possible causes of my condition. I decided to eliminate all caffeine from my diet. After release from the hospital, I returned for a stress test which I passed with flying colors due to my habit of running.

The elimination of caffeine relieved 90% of my arthritic pain, but I also experienced bone spurs in the neck (confirmed by xray) and metatarsal callus on the ball of the feet. I decided to lower my calcium consumption and found that this reduced the bone spurs and joint stiffness. But I still had some joint tenderness. I noticed a man wearing a copper bracelet and tried this myself but was unsatisfied with it. I found 4 mg copper capsules by Twinlab and I read that copper should be balanced in the body by zinc in a 15-to-1 ratio. I found 60 mg zinc capsules by Twinlab which provided the right dosage to balance the 4 mg copper capsule.

This combination made my joints stronger so that I was able to twist off tight jar lids by hand and put my hands in very cold pool water without pain. Later I noticed that when I started eating yoghurt, my thumb cartilage felt like sandpaper and irritated my joint movement, so again I had to be very conscious of controlling my intake of calcium.

cause

posted by Beak C. on 21 Sept 2011 at 3:06 am

I have RA, Osteo and Sjogren's syndrome so between the 3 types of arthritis I am in constant pain and the Sjogren's has dried my body out completely. Eyes constantly feel like they have rocks in them, choking for no reason is a common occurence and the joints keep me awake and have caused me to slow down considerably. They say that the immune system goes haywire, but WHY? What causes that to happen? Can stress cause it?
