Very Painful
posted by Nemarca on 13 Sept 2009 at 7:03 pmI just had shingles and I can truly say that the information given is authentic. Shingles is probably the most painful condition any adult can get. Most people have never heard of it and there is a lot of prejudice and ignorance about it. A lot of people think it is contagious. This is an excellent article.

Very good article
posted by mommydearest on 05 Sept 2010 at 4:15 pm
This is a very good article, it provides accurate information and helpful tips. I had shingles before and was missed diagnosed at first with a staph infection. I was pregnant at the time I had shingles but was able to receive the anti-viral medication. It is very important to go to the doctor as soon as possible, the longer you wait the worse it gets and the less they can do for it.
homeopathy - Echinacea
posted by Heather Vincent on 19 Sept 2010 at 2:57 am
I am taking Rhus Tox 30 3 times a day and putting Urtica Urens on the rash which is around left eyebrow and forehead - my mother had shingles 10 years ago and used these remedies resulting in totally clearing the shingles in 1 week. I have not seen a Dr yet - the pain is not bad just tingles with sharper sensations occasionally. After reading this article I will start taking Echinacea for 15 days to boost the immune system.

I have shingles
posted by Marlene Margot on 08 Feb 2011 at 6:04 am
I am in my fifties and I am in my first week of shingles, as anyone that's had shingles knows it is extremely painful. I think this article was very informative. I've never had chicken pox, but I believe that I could have been a carrier all these years, is that correct? If the pain can last for years then do all the other symptoms last as well? or do the lethargy, fever, etc go away just leaving the pain? Thanks again for the article.
shingles 2x
posted by chris h. on 14 Feb 2011 at 10:08 am
I had shingles from a fatal fall, I destroyed my nerve from the fall and contracted SEVERE shingles, that was nearly a year ago I still have the pain left behind like it happened a few days ago, that was on my left torso. Now I am back in the hospital last week for shingles again on my left arm this time I have the rash the last time I did not have the rash so it was hard for the gp to diagnose me. My rash is disappearing but the pain in my arm and torso r still there, can I get the shingles vaccine now, am I at risk to get shingles again? The gp doesn't know why I am getting shingles I am a perfectly healthy 35 yo (except for the fall)...
Stress Related????
posted by Mindi on 15 Apr 2011 at 9:21 am
I am currently in week one of an outbreak. I had a pain that felt like it went from the front of my right breast through my back. My skin on the right side only felt like I had a severe sunburn and hurt to be touched. I was clueless until I broke out a few days later with blisters on my breast, under my armpit and around to my back bone. Went immed to my GP and got the diagnotis. She gave me valtrex and a pain med. I want to know how the stress works into outbreaks of this diease. I've read in several places that stress is a main reason for outbreaks. I've been very stressed over the past 6 months and will now work on decreasing it. Still want to know why stress brings it on. I felt the article was excellent.
My experience with shingles
posted by Srini on 21 May 2011 at 6:13 am
Firstly, Thanks for the detailed explanation about Shingles and for all the readers comments sharing their experience. I would also like to relate my experience and hopefully it will help someone else!
1. The exact reason for the re-emergence of shingles is not clearly defined. However a combination of factors could explain it:
Weakened Immunity due to possibly heredity, change in weather (exposure to cold, wind from warm weather and vice versa repeatedly), stress, excessive consumption of sugar/processed foods minus veges, lack of zinc.
2. My initial symptoms were burning sensations under the rib including fatigue, joint pain, fever outbreak of sweats in the night.
Since the initial symptoms are not a clear indication, always be watchful and be aware that Shingles usually breaks out only on 1 side of the body along a "Belt" of Nerves emmanating from the spinal section. Therefore, if you feel rash/pain in only one side and other symptoms, go immediately to see your Primary Care Physician.
It is extremely important to treat shingles as early as possible to suffer less pain and avoid complications.
Good Luck everyone. I am on my way to recovery

UGH SHINGLES!!!!!!!!!
posted by Ashley on 03 Oct 2011 at 7:49 pm
Well I am a 22 year old woman and I have just been diagnosed with shingles. It is on my neck in several different places. The pain I am experiencing is relatively minor though I do get rather sharp pains occasionally. For me, the worse thing to deal with is the itching. I bought hydrocortisone cream to help with that and it seems to do ok. I was told by my doc that my shingles were probably stressed induced.
This article seems pretty accurate to me and accurately decsribes what I am going through right now.
I would not wish shingles on any one....
can injury lead to shingles
posted by lynda on 29 Oct 2011 at 9:49 pm
I have an autoimmune disorder and am on tons of medication, including methotrexate and steroids. Recently I fell and hurt my ankle and enack. The next morning my temple was bruised and had blisters. I thought I had hurt my head in the fall. As the days passed the bruising turned brown and my right eye swollen shut. More larger bumps showed up on my forehead and scalp, along with terrible headaches. I was then diagnosed with shingles, but really too late
for treatment.
Its been about a month and the bumps are still on my head and red splotch on my temple. My headaches are nonstop. They feel like a clamp is consistently around my head adding pressure. I'm also having sinus issues and dizziness at times. I tend to mess up speaking more often. Words just come out wrong. Is this part of it? What could have caused it? I'm in my 40s and had chickenpox as a child. I teach children. Are they in danger from me? Am I in danger from them and all they bring in?

Shingles and L -Lysine
posted by Sally Robinson on 16 Mar 2012 at 1:38 pm
When I got shingles I got some L-Lysine ( a naturally occuring amino acid found in the body) it took away the headache and stopped my rash itching. I got better quite quickly after taking it, I have had several attacks start, sometimes from the sun or eating walnuts and the Lysine has stopped the attack. My husband also takes Lysine for cold sore prevention you need at least 1000mg.I had the shingles shot toady, it has made me pretty dizzy, drowsy and have a headache but hopefully I wont get it again now.It only works for 80% of people. Alot of places require you prepay about $300 upfront even though I am 100% covered for it.

Natural Treatment For Shingles
posted by DerekS on 30 Apr 2012 at 11:01 pm
I believe people need to be looking for natural treatments for shingles.
Many times, the prescriptions that doctors are giving to treat shingles can actually make the conditions worse.
For example, a simple, yet effective method for getting rid of some of the pain associated with shingles is to use a heating pad on the selected areas. Easy enough, right?
Spend a little time and invest in alternative methods for treating your shingles - you will be glad you did.
