Child Stammer Due To Lack Of Self Confidence

posted by jiya on 01 Feb 2010 at 7:59 am

I am a student, and teaching will be my option for job. Just for that reason I was trying to find out the reasons for stammering. I believe children stammer due to lack of confidence....that may be they are right or maybe not. Some time for a child the next persons acceptance does matter.

He cannot frame his emotions and lack of confidence make him feel more tensed and so he stammer more. Like one of my students he is weak in English so he cannot frame the sentences. I keep on saying him to try so that he will learn. But due to the presence of other students, he is worried about his image and acceptance in his peer group, so he stammers more.

another possible cause - stammering

posted by John Taylor on 18 Aug 2010 at 12:25 pm

I have stammered all my life although I have overcome a lot of it. I think a lot of it is caused by an emotional conflict. I had a conflict with my mother when I was young as I've got a fast brain and my mother had a slow one. I also had anxiety problems which I inherited from her. She also tried to turn me into a right handed person from a left handed one which caused a lot of confusion. When I worked with a chap when I was in my thirties we was emotionally compatible and he was very positive ny brain was brought up to speed and I got out of the habit of stammering to not stammering. I hope this can be of some use to someone as I know what a murderous thing stammering can be.

Stammerring Disadvantage in Social Life @ Stigma

posted by Jonathan Leong on 08 Feb 2011 at 8:04 am

Hey Guys, I'm Jonathan from Malaysia. I do have stuttering since childhood and age gets older stammering become lesser but still not so fluent and can be detected by people when have long conversation / communication break-down. The BIG problem and Challenge is when you want to say the word you really want to say you afraid lips jamming or urg aaarh sound be heard by people you rather hide it by substitute with similar words which closely related.

This is a huge mistake which can cause lots of misunderstanding among friend. People might think you are not rational. A word of advice what your brain want to say Say it. I want orange juice say I want orange juice don't say I want an apple juice instead. Anyways I'm 25 years old now. working. At least you guys out there share the same pain as me. A friend advices me. As a stammerer don't think about your stammering but think what God put hidden talents in your life. I believe God is mighty and fair/square. Similary why do short/ugly ppl speak so fluently and their vocal is excellent. God's creation. We are in this world for a purpose and to enjoy our talents through out our life.

@Jonathan (Malaysia-25yrs)

People says I need to think before I speak, but sometimes I just can't speak it out

I dunno if this is the cause of stammer, few days after I was born me and my parents were in a plane, suddenly my mother drops me on the floor, and my head had bleed until the doctor have stitch the wound.

I have experience stammering while I'm speaking to someone and they just ignore me and I felt embarrassing

Stammering caused by head trauma?

posted by digs325 on 20 Apr 2011 at 1:47 pm

My boyfriend stammers but he didn't start stammering until he was in his early 20s. He used to box and suffered concussions. Is this what lead to his stuttereing/stammering? He never had it as a child.

worried mom

posted by diana on 21 Apr 2011 at 1:41 am

I am a mother of a 4 year old boy who of late stammers a lot. Initially, he used to stammer less often but now am worried coz when he tries to say something, his mouth remains open trying to fight for words, he even goes as far as stamping his feet and winking his eyes. I'm grateful for the article I have just read on this page and optimistic that it is only a matter of time before the problem relinquishes.

practical way out

posted by Edi on 23 Jun 2011 at 6:55 am

From my own exprience stammer may start at any age and affect both sexes. Practical ways of getting out are by relaxing oneself try and gain control over each speech and say it slowly.

Simple Steps

posted by Grace on 23 Jun 2011 at 2:47 pm

In working with someone who stammers, he has overcome this by 90%.

1. You are better than anyone else or at least equivalent to everyone else in the world ( self esteem/ confidence issue is dealt with)

2. Relax your body. 3Ds. Drop you jaw, drop your shoulders, take 10 deep breaths.

3. Slowly practice whatever you want to say.

4. Speak with confidence in front of others. ( to make yourself feel good, imagine others in front of you as dumb, naked, donkeys, whatever).

5. Always remember you are your number one person. Everyone and their opinions come after that.

If you persistently, practice this you will see improvement
