Statin deplete CQ10

posted by Mark on 26 Apr 2005 at 10:43 pm

It has been well known for many years that statin drugs deplete CQ10 levels and thereby INCREASE heart attack risk.
Regulatory approval of this drug is questionable.

Questioning: Use of Statin DRUGS.

posted by Suzanne Culp on 07 Jun 2005 at 4:49 pm

I really wonder if it is really necessary to use a compound that is not natural in the body, but the effects are worse than the cure.

Statin drugs are not what was expected, and have caused many problems, among them is loss of memory(both long and short term), muscle soreness( in upper arm & body ), loss of balance, shorten the temper, and ect. I feel that the medication is not for my husband. In 5 years that he was on the drug Zocor, he had a problem with his memory both short and long term, balance is disrupted, problems with muscles in the limbs, and burning of the muscle over the heart, legs and arms.
After cornering his doctor about his problems, the doctor finnally took him off this medication. With in 4 days, he said the cloud had lifted, he was starting to focus again on things that he had not been able to think about while on this medication. He had clearly explained about the muscle soreness in his upper arms to the doctor only to be told that it was a good explaintion of his symptoms. He thinks the doctor was not hearing him at all. I think that he was quite right on this one. When are doctors going to listen to the patient, and not the drug companies? Also I would like to hear from others with symptoms on Statin drug, there 5 or 6 Zocor or simbastatin is just one of those.

Statins are poison for some

posted by hf jenkins on 05 Oct 2005 at 3:32 pm

After years of taking every differnet type statin drug my doctors never listened to my complaints re side effects. I've had elevated liver enzymes, muscle pain, ckp lelevation. all the cardiologists want to do is change brands and increase the dosage. No matter hyow low my total lipids were, it wasn't low enough. No more of the poison for me. I can get new ateries easier than a new liver. HJ

statin or satin drugs

posted by bill ragsdale on 12 Nov 2005 at 5:37 pm

I took lipitor for 2 years with sore muscles. My doctor changed me to zocor and I could not remember where I put my car keys./ I took myself off of statin drugs and take 500 mg nican twice a day. My HDL is now 54 and my LDL is 106. The reason doctors don't give patients nician is because there is not any money in it.

My mother has taken Lipitor for around 3.5 year. It was prescribed by a cardiologist. It is believed to be the cause of her loss of balance - walking "around like a drunken sailor". Has been off them for 3 weeks now - but still no improvment. How long deos it take to wear out of the system?

Some doctors say statins kill slowly

posted by martha council on 26 May 2006 at 8:03 pm

I took zocor 40 mg felt terrible, foggy, confusion, concentration and loss of balance. I stopped. Doctors don't understand or want to know or care to hear what you have to say. they just say take it.I am trying Q10 and Niacinamide see what happens. But no more statins. Theres a new drug called Lipid which deals with the intestines. WE should look into it. Oh I am presently suffering from 6th cranial cerebral palsy, with no answer as to why.

PMR-Zocor

posted by Jerlivee on 03 Jun 2006 at 7:21 am

My husband was on Zocor for about three years, he first started on a 40 Mg and got really Verbal with all kinds of things. His whole personality changed.

I called to see if the DR would go down to a 20 MG, he said no. So, I went to another Dr and she put him on a 20 for about two and half years. He started getting muscle pain and from his shoulders down to knees.

One morning he awakened and couldn't get out of bed. He was in so much pain. Wewent to his DR. who finially took him off Zocor and now he has Pmr( Polymyolagia Rhumatica ) which should go away in about 3-4 years. Do you think the Zocor caused this? the DR won't coment.

Advicor 500/20 Mg And CQ10

posted by rita on 18 Aug 2006 at 8:50 pm

I started taking Advicor 500/20 1 daily Jan 2006. My Dr. increased it to 2x daily about a month ago. My diet had not changed [not healthy].

I have been on South Beach since Aug. 1. I have lost 10 lbs. since then. I do feel better, more energy etc. I take a multi, B6, B12, and vit C daily.I also take BP and thyroid meds daily.

I have been reading a lot about the depletion of CQ 10 when taking statins. This is starting to concern me. I have none of the side effects mentioned from the Advicor except a burning feeling on my skin at first, but not now. What is your opinion on my info? I am taking some of the info I have gathered about statins and CQ10 to my dr. at my next visit.[Oct. 10] Thank you

What's Going On?

posted by John on 23 Feb 2007 at 1:50 pm

I take Crestor, 40 mg and C Q 10 150mg, I feel like my head is foggy all the time, my shoulders, arms, knees, calves and muscles ach. I seem to forget things more and more. I called the doctor and they told me to increase (double) the dose of C Q 10 to 300mg a day.

What will happen to me if I just stop the statins? My cholesterol is now 206 from 260, and I feel like I'm the weakest I've ever been. I seem to be losing muscle strength and drive. The doctor said he saw something very small and thinks the Crestor will most likely take care of it. Can anyone help with advice.

What Should I Do?

posted by colette deMontarnal on 22 Mar 2007 at 7:34 pm

I take Lipitor ( 40mg) and I feel that I have gotten every side effect possible with this drug. My doctor doesn't think that the Lipitor is that bad, but I know that it is affecting my whole body. I have never felt this terrible!

Crestor To Blame

posted by Zoey on 07 Apr 2007 at 3:55 pm

I have only been on 10 mg of Crestor for 5 months, but am taking myself off. The leg pain has become so bad I can't sleep at night and I can't think clearly. If the Ornish diet is working, I will go on it before I will give in to feeling the way I have been! I have blockage in two arteries of up to 50 percent, but I would rather take my chances and really live, than live longer, but only half-way exist! Has anyone tried the Ornish diet and what were your results?

Statin Side Effects

posted by Roger on 04 Feb 2008 at 10:54 pm

I too have similar problems with Lipitor a statin drug. I've also read the report regarding it's inhibitory process of the naturally occuring enzyme CQ10 and therefore lowering it's effectiveness as a congestive heart failure medication. I recently had a by-pass (within the last four/five months) and the grafts failed. So they went back in and placed stents in the original arteries that were bypassed. Very frustrating. I will be consulting with my cardiologist regarding this finding. The report I mentioned is in the U.S. Patent Website.

Pravastain

posted by Timothy Wisk on 13 Apr 2008 at 9:39 am

Been on this for about 3 weeks upon insistence frm doc...a bit of muscle pain in arms, And shoulder, but feel tired, more than before(Im almost 10 months quit frm cigarattes)..sometimes I trip over my own feet..Im trying CQ10 150mg to see if that makes a diff...the stin at night, then CQ10 along w/ other vitamins..if this continues, Im gonna try Chlorest-off and a couple other things...I know the natural foods way might cost more(statins generic at Walmart only 4.00)...but my liver test were off, along with borderline BP and sugar so I fear taking these statins will make that worse,,,Id rather have bad arteries than a bad liver and do plant phenols and sterols to keep my lip[ids down..damn doctors...find something wrong and keep drugging me:(

Not ONLY that, I just plain don't feel like myself

My Experience With Statins

posted by Barbara Fuller on 07 Jan 2009 at 2:52 pm

I have been on a statin for years and had no bad experiences of any kind. My cardiologist told me that, considering how many hundreds of thousands of people on them, the percentage of statin users who do experience muscle weakness, etc. is actually very low.

He also said that he and all of his colleagues take a statin drug as a preventative. He also said that any problems are usually eliminated by changing the particular statin the person is on. I have taken Lipitor for many years without any problems, and I am on the highest dose of 80 mg a day. Without it, my cholesterol numbers soar, so I will be on it for life. Don't get caught up by all of the alarmists who post on these sites. Get more professional information for yourself.

Leg Pains

posted by Starchild on 11 Mar 2009 at 8:01 am

I have been on many statin drugs...the last being simvastatin. I have cramps in my legs and hands constantly. I woke up last month with severe pain in both calves and nearly passed out from the pain. My doctor has no solution except to change brands...she had prescribed Quinine tablets but said that she can no longer do so. I am taking CQ10 and have, on her advice, stopped taking simvastatin. The leg cramps are gone although they do ache once in a while. I also drink small glasses of Tonic water (quinine water) several times a day.

Since my doctor "can't" prescribe the CQ10 dosage, I have been taking 50m 3 times a day....

For years I have had "dry eyes", constant redness and tears. Since stopping simvastatin, my eyes are not dry or as red and I can SEE clearly. Is is from stopping the medication or is it from using CQ10? What ever it is, it's wonderful!

I would like advice on the dosage of CQ10 ....I am 71 and female.

Problem With Statins

posted by Mona on 05 Aug 2009 at 11:29 am

I have no problem taking Statins.. My husband has had terrible effects and is now off them totally and taking CQ10 and Fish Oil. He had severe leg pains, loss of feeling, couldn't walk more than a half block before legs gave out..Doctors kept putting him on and taking him off statins. I hope there is no permanent damage. Not everyone can take every medication that is on the market..Need to use own judgement at times because doctors don't know everything,.. He's been off statins again for about 3 weeks so we'll see what happens..I hope it's good.

simvastatin side effects?

posted by jada on 12 Sept 2009 at 3:04 am

I stopped taking simvastatin about 10 days ago. I do not have high cholesterol but my cardiologist prescribed the drug as part of a heart failure tx regimen in 2006 when I was 42 (i have non ischemic myocardial infarction-small leak in aortic valve).

After I started the drug, my optometrist diagnosed me with dry eyes when I experienced a corneal scratch. I have not had a problem with dry eyes in the past. Since I stopped taking simvastatin my eyes are no longer red and dry, I am more alert, I sleep better and my mood has improved drastically. I am no longer easily agitated.

I plan to meet with my cardiologist to inform her that I stopped the statin. I must say I am a little perturbed that my cardiologist did not discuss the side effects of this medication. Once I started to read the information on line by both current and former users, I was able to make some sense out of what was happening to my body. I have also developed alopecia areata for which I am currently being treated. This is also a side effect of the medication.

Reduced Dosage Really Worked 4 Me

posted by Victor C on 18 May 2010 at 5:01 pm

My cholesterol will run 235-250 (tho I have good ratio) even tho my weight is within Weight Watchers goal and I exercise daily. I am ovo-lacto vegetarian so I don't have a high fat diet. Internal Medicine Dr put me on Pravastatin / cholesterol went to 140 with great ratio but within months muscle pain was pretty intense.

Dr told me he had the same problem so we then tried Simivastatin 10mg for a month then went to 1/2 dose a day (dr said it would work about the same) - no problems and cholesterol is staying at 155-160. I'm going to even try 1/2 dose every other day and see what happens. I think some of you guys might benefit by experimenting with reduced dosages - for me a little bit goes a long way and it might for you too.

Auto-Immune Disease And Statin Drugs

posted by C.B.C. on 25 May 2010 at 1:48 pm

I was diagnosed with both Dermatomyositis (a muscle disease) and Rheumatoid Arthritis 25 years ago. With the help of steroids and Ibuprofen - over time - I recovered. Difficulties remained..but NOT disabling anymore..tolerable.
After a heart attack 4 years ago, I was given a statin drug, along with other heart medications, even though my Cholesterol is EXCELLENT.
My Auto-Immune diseases returned with a VENGEANCE !!! I also believe that this has weakened my Heart (due to muscle disease). The Cardiologists say it is not true. I don't believe them. They don't know much about Dermatomyositis...too few people have it to make it "profitable" to study.

I've QUIT trusting Doctors who won't listen. (I've got 25 years experience with my Auto-Immune diseases----yet they ignore my opinion...and they expect ME to BELIEVE THEM.)
It's NOT very likely that I will.

I don't take "statins" anymore...and am looking for a "functional way" to regain my muscle strength. I was once very strong. Now..I can do little...yet I think the heart is doing much better.

Doctors are like mechanics. Some good ...some lousy.

my 2 pesos worth.

Lipitor Ruined My Life

posted by John Morgan on 23 Aug 2010 at 7:24 am

Visit after visit, my doctor wouldn't acknowledge side effects that I was experiencing. Finally while visiting in Canada, the government issued a warning on TV regarding Crestor. I had complained about nearly every mentioned problem to no avail. I stopped taking Lipitor immediately and within a month, I no longer awakened in the middle of the night with the feeling of a knife stuck between my shoulder blades. Sleep is necessary to heal. I almost stopped sleeping. I was terrified to step into and out of the bath tub after falling numerous times. I went from being able to climb a ladder with a chain saw to cut tree limbs, to being afraid to get on a ladder.

My balance is gone. I had to concentrate to walk for fear of falling. I pulled a hamstring for no reason. My muscles are wasting and my strength is rapidly diminishing. It has been four years since my last dose of Lipitor. I am 81 and now take no medications except for supplements. Had it not been for Lipitor, my health would be excellent. Had I stayed with it, I would be in a nursing home but am afraid that the long term effect will be to put me there prematurely as I frequently fall in my home and in my yard. My worse nightmare is to fall when shifting my feet while using my chain saw. I now wonder if my body can produce enough cholesterol to sustain the needed production of necessary hormones.
