I have had the same experience. The awful sore throat and mouth from thrush, voice change and headaches. I would NOT recommend this for mild athsma as the side effects just aren't worth it!

To prevent thrush, every person taking an inhaled steriod SHOULD BE RINSING after each use. And, using Advair for mild intermittent is not recommended according to the NIH Guidelines. Although, you didn't mention if you were referring to a mild intermittent or mild persistant-in that case an inhaled steriod is recommened.

I have been using Advair since it came on the market. I have a mild form of asthma and get by with one puff a day. I have not used a rescue inhaler in years. I have never had thrush but always use before I brush my teeth. I was told by my doc to ALWAYS rinse regardless of what kind of inhaler you are using. I am concerned about the recent news stories, however.

This is to go with Cindy. I was prescribed Advair a few weeks ago for very mild asthma symptoms and was told to do two puffs a day 100/50. I wanted to get off of it but I also wanted to see if it is okay to do 1 puff a day, and then eventually do none. Is it not safe to just stop taking it?

How Does One Quit Advair?

I have seen this question posted several times but have seen no answer! :(
How does one get off of Advair? Just cold turkey? Surely you cut the doses down, but how?
Do you notice your lungs immediately getting worse as you get off of it?
I want so badly to get off of this stuff, I've been on it for about 6 yrs now and it's caused me sooo many problems!!! :(
Help is much appreciated! Thanks so much! :)
Quitting Advair

With my doctor's blessing, I have gone from 250/50 advair 2x daily, to 100/50 2x daily, to 100/50 1x daily. I am feeling so much better!--and no worse as far as my asthma! My mouth has healed, (I ALWAYS rinsed thoroughly after using, and still began to have severe problems a year ago)
My nighttime severe foot cramps are gone. I no longer have to cough and clear my throat constantly. My voice is no longer sore and hoarse, and the depression and anxiety (that I had no idea was related) have lifted. I have been able to lose weight, and have much more stamina.

I was on 250/50 dose 2x a day for mild asthma, and went to my doctor to ask if I could quit. She said since i haven't had an attack in 3 years, I could just quit cold turkey. I never had any of the side effects written about, but I always brush my teeth after I used advair. Wondering if anyone else has quit advair and monitored how their breathing was afterwards...

I was on advair for 5 years. It just really started bothering me in the last year. Thrush, sore mouth, cloudy eyes, really thick mucus, horseness, contatntly clearing my throat, fatigue, joint pain.
I was using more and more thinking the thick mucus was going to choke me. Last saturday morning I went to take it and realized it was empty and i don't know how long it was empty, so I decided I would try to get off it.I just stopped ! It has been 7 days and I'm doing fine.
I still have some mucus dripping down back of throat, but it is much thinner. Not clearing my throat as much.Joint pain in shoulders gone.I,m going to ask my DR. for rescue inhaler-just in case, so I don't panic if something happens. But, for the most part I'm happy. I don't like thinking I have to have a drug!!

I've been on Advair for about 2 years now and both times i've tried to get off it. I have gotten considerably ill. I never thought of weening of it though.... The funny thing I have never experienced physical side effects from the medicine. But now discovering about the depression and anxiety thing, I think I need to quit. My mucus problems are becoming worse too. What do all of you guys think I should do?

Brenda, your post just blew my mind when I read it. All the symptoms you were having is the same as mine. I truly thought I was losing my mind or going through pre-menopause. I have been using Advair 250/50 2 x day for about a year now.
Though I must admit I hardly ever take my emergency inhaler, my side effects are horrible. Dizziness, earache. Just started getting sore throat and hoarseness. Headache due to sinus, and the worst that I read you went through, is depression. Bad depression, and I have put on about 30 pounds. I am going to take the chance and quit cold turkey, I no longer want to go through this. I am so glad to have found your post, now I know I am sane, lol.
Alex, This Is Mostly For You

Alex, how have you become considerable ill when you try to get off of Advair? I haven't had my Advair since Thursday night at 6 pm and it is Saturday 8:57 am. I have been taking Advair for over a year. I can remember a few months ago, I wasn't able to get my prescription filled for a few days, and one day without it, I felt as though I was suffocating. But not this time.
I have noticed this morning (Saturday) I'm spitting up mucus I never did before. My breathing is doing pretty good. I took my Albutera this morning, just to relieve a little tightness, really didn't need too, I think it's just mental the fear of thinking I can't breath. I slept good last night for once, no restless leg, no back pain, a little pain in my arms and wrist, I didn't get pain in my back this morning when I did dishes, which I always do. I have a little bounce in my step. More energy.
My face doesn't have that moon face look, swelling has gone down. My upper belly's not bloated. My voice is still horse. I don't feel depressed this morning. Wow! I feel as though I'm coming back to my ol' happy self in just a couple of days. I would rather hit my emergency inhaler, 3 times a day, if I have too. Spend $38.00 a month. Then pay $200.00 a month for something that makes me wish I was dead.
Advair did help me breath better at first, but in the long run I noticed it was making me worst, and the side effects where terrible. I also prayed and asked God to help get me off this, I'm not religious, but I am spiritual. And I believe I wanted it so bad, my prayers where answered. Don't let the fear of what might happen if you quit, stop you from quitting. Try not to do as much in the first couple of days, and fill your body make the changes, if you feel your chest getting a little tight. Stop sit down take a deep breath out of your nose, tell yourself it's all in your mind, and if need too, take your emergency inhaler. Good luck everyone, and God Bless...
Thanks

Lisa, your advice was truly appreciated. You are probably right about it being in my head. I don't even remember what I was like without advair, but I know it was better. I think I will end up quitting here very soon. Thanks for all your help.

It has been day 7 I'm doing just fine. I'm taking my Albutera about 2 times a day. But I have acute Asthma, and its cold right now, I always have problems when its cold outside.. My stomachs went down, the horseness is gone, I'm sleeping better at night. No more depression, no more moodiness. My face has really thinned out, even my husband notice in the first couple of days the swelling has gone in my face. I've dropped about 2 pounds around my waist. And no more heartburn. So to answer everyone's question, yes, you can stop cold turkey. Lisa
Advair And Weight Loss
posted by Tracy on 19 Jan 2008 at 10:49 am
I started dieting and eating right on 1/2/08. It has been 2 and half weeks now and I have only lost 4.5 lbs. I should have lost about 10-13 lbs. by now. I did this same diet about 8 months ago and lost 10-13 lbs the first couple weeks but I wasn't using Advair at the time, but I am now. So. I stopped using my Advair about 6 days ago and still cannot lose weight. I'm doing everything right and am committed to my eating plan, but every morning when I get on the scale it says the same thing! I'm so frustrated! Does anyone know how long it takes for this stuff to get out of your system? My Doctor said it could take a couple weeks but I just don't know. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Weight Loss/weaning

I've taken Advair for about 1 1/2 years. You can just stop taking it if on a low dose but if higher you need to slowly ween yourself off of it. Also you must rinse your mouth/gargle to remove the steroids - once I started gargling and spitting my sore throat went away. As for the weight loss I just don't know. I've been averaging less than 1 lb a week loss and I am also doing everything right. It is very frustrating. However, Advair really helped my asthma. I have not had ANY symptoms in over a year - even when exercising! It is a real blessing for me.

For someone like myself who pretty much has a hard time breathing 24/7 i find that advair is worth the side effect of thrush, and what ever else you can get from it.
But that's just my opinion, Breathing well > side effects.
No More Advair

I have had asthma for about 40 years. Quite controlled with rescue inhaler and Asthmacort. NEVER A problem with meds. Perhaps once a year when I catch a bad cold I have to go on prednisone which has always made me feel like a million bucks!
My doctor put me on Adbvair about 9 months ago. It helped my asthma immediately...no more resue inhalers but after a couple of months I started having swelling in my thyroid area AND loss of voice occasionally. Visit to ENT doctor. Ruled out ALL the bad stuff like cancer and I asked if the Advair could be causing it. He told me yes, and suggested I switch to a different brand.
I did not change since my asthma was doing so well. Since march though, I have had a horrible cough with lots of sputum. Several rounds of Prednisone and antibiotics have not gotten rid of this and on my last visit to the doctor, she told me she fears that my asthma has turned into emphazema and I need to see a specialist for testing.
I have NEVER smoked a day in my life. I asked her if this could be from the Advair. She said she doubted it but gave me a sample of another brand. Same old ingredients and side effects so I stopped using my Advair, cold turkey. So far I am fine..over a week now. I am not going to use these products again. I never had thrush from Advair and like those who do not have it, I always rinse my throat exceptionally well after use. I am actually doing somewhat better after being off Advair.
I cough up much less mucous and the rattling in my lungs is decreasing. I pray that I do not have emphazema and that once I get all the side effects from the advair out of my body I will be blessed to just have plain old asthma! I would love to know if anyone else has bee so affected as I have. Thanks.

I have been taking Advair 500/50 for three weeks now and about a week and a half ago I started having terrorizing fear pulsing through my head, chest, and body every hour or so. This has been accompanied by mild depression, sweating, and nausea. I had no idea that it could be connected to Advair until I called my doctor, which she said is the cause. Please others out there feeling depression and anxiety know that it might not be you, but the medicine: Talk to your doctor!!!
