Very Bad Taste In Mouth
posted by Michellle on 03 Sept 2005 at 9:56 amI have been on Ambien for the last two years, but it was only lasting 4-6 hours. I have been trying Lunesta and I only got two pills from the pharmacy because my dr. said it was basically the same thing as Ambien. My tolerance to Ambien has really decreased so I agreed to try Lunesta. The bad taste in my mouth is enough to go back to Ambien! How does one get rid of the bad mouth taste?

I am going to have to look on like if anyone has found a way to avoid the horrible long lasting taste. I can't drink milk or water because I feel like I'm sucking on a bitter pill when i do so.

I have only been on Lunesta for about a week. My dr. had me on ambian for about 3 months but, wanted to take me off of it due to it's addictive nature and was not helping my sleep anyway. He put me on Lunesta. After waking up with a headache and looking to see if for some reason I managed to place my coins in my mouth for safe keeping overnight I realized that this Rx has its downfalls. I did manage to get at least 4 hours of sleep which is about 3 more than normal. So I called a friend of mine that is a pharmacist and he called the Drug Mfg. Get this - they said that the taste is a side effect. No kidding. Anyway they told him that they are working to correct the problem of the taste. Other recommendations they said are to drink a large glass of water with the pill and drink juice in the morning. Other recommendations I have seen here and other places are a small amount of Pure mint oil, tomoato juice, and grapefruit juice. I am still weighing the bad taste vs. the improved sleep. The jury is still out here.

I was willing to try a different sleep medication. When my Dr. gave me lunesta I was so happy........until the middle of the night....What causes this horrible taste??
Lunesta vs ambien-who would win....

My experience with these drugs has been that Ambien works great but lasts for only 3-4 hours sleep...not enough for me! I break them up and keep taking 5 mg whenever i woke up which could be once or rwice..so i take 10 mg-15 mg of ambien every night.
I like Lunesta-but bad taste was unbearable! I bought vegetable capsules and take Lunesta inside of these which cuts down on the taste a lot. Lunesta gives me 6-7 hours sleep straight through which is fine and good. I ordered lunesta recently and feel it is not working at all for some reason-i;m still wide awake and there was no bad taste at all..maybe i got a bad batch but in general i like Lunesta better...Ambien actually leaves a bad taste in my mouth all the time-maybe i am taking too much? I feel like i have bad breath a lot lately-pill breath or something! Yuck! anywho..so that's the story....
Lunesta works

In my opinion the taste isn't unbearable and goes away after a couple of hours. I am happy getting eight hours sleep a night. No other sleep med has ever done this. I just tried Ambien Cr and I woke up at 3.45am. I never liked ambien and ambien cr comfimed it. The taste resolved after two days and never tasted it again. I am glad they came out with Lunesta. I now sleep 7-8 hrs a day. The hell with splitting pills with ambien to get a full night sleep. Lunesta all the way.

Lunesta V Ambien

Lunesta does leave a horrible taste in your mouth, yuck! Actually Lunesta took about 45min to put me to sleep and I dont believe it kept me sleep any longer than Ambien does. So I will go with Ambien because it does put me to sleep faster even though i do wake up in about 4 hours minus the horrible after taste. I hear Ambien has a CR-extended release tab? Any thoughts I would love to try it.
Ambien bad taste and veneers

I have been on Ambien for about 6 months, it is leaving such a bad taste in my mouth. I recently had veneers put on my teeth and the temporary's kept coming off, the dentist said she had never seen anything like it. I wonder if the Ambien has anything to do with it.
Bad Taste

I too have experienced the bad taste from Lunesta. I took ONE and that was enough for me. I tasted the foul metallic taste within 10 mins of taking the pill. I resolved never to take another one, till today. I took one by accident, tried to take one of my hormone pills, same size and almost color...tasted something foul fifteen minutes later and almost croaked to find that I took a lunesta at 4 in the afternoon! I fought the sleepiness, but here it is 11pm and my mouth still tastes like the National Mint! I'm gonna be SICK. FIX THIS TASTE THING LUNESTA!
1st time trying Lunesta

Hi there. We all know sleep is definitely a necessity, at lease for me. I switched tonight, actually, from Ambien and Restoril to Lunesta. Wow, I'm glad I found this site b/c I was just now tasting some NASTY bitter something! I only really notice it when I inhale or exhale. It's really gross. I never got this with the other sleep pills. I'm switiching in hopes that I can fall asleep, and stay asleep. I tend to wake up around 3 am and can't get back to sleep. We'll see tonight. :) Sweet dreams all...
Like it and hate it

I recently went to the doctor for the first time to treat my insomnia. she gave me samples of Lunesta, Restoril, and Sonata.
The first night i tried Sonata but woke up in the middle of the night like 5 or 6 times. So then I tried Lunesta, which actually worked the best but the taste was horrible!! And I agree with it being especially bad when you breathe in and out...weird.
What else was weird is that my Dr. told me the restoril would be the strongest of the 3 and would really knock me out, But last night after taking it, 2 hours later I was still wide awake reading a book in bed. Any suggestions of others to try?

I have been on ambien for about 3 months, and it's getting horribly addicting - not to metion not really even working anymore. My Dr. swithced me to 3mg of Lunesta (after 5mg of Ambien). I just took my first pill about min ago (no bad taste yet!). We will see what happens! I am hoping that it works since it is OK for long term use and I'm probably going to have to use a sedative to get me to sleep for the rest of my life.
Lunesta

Yes, it does leave a bad taste, and not just during the night. I taste it all day long - everytime I drink or eat something it tastes BAD... and I dont sleep well either.. I'm wondering if it is at all worth it
Lunesta - Too Much?
posted by Judy on 19 Nov 2005 at 7:32 pm
I've been taking Lunesta for a couple of weeks and sleep better with it (5-6 hours) than without it (2-3 hours). I'll endure the horrid taste for the extra sleep. I'd like to get the 7 to 8 hours sleep I used to get, though. Has anyone ever tried a higher dosage - more than 3 mg.?
Bad Breath from CR portion
posted by Halitosis on 21 Nov 2005 at 10:59 pm
It is my belief that the Controlled Release (CR) ingredients in both Ambien and Lunesta is causing the bad breath and bad taste condition. Ambien itself does not appear to cause the bad breath or taste condition, but the Ambien CR definitely does. It is such a powerful metallic taste and halitosis condition that it can actually empty a room of your closest family and friends. Only Ambien CR worked for me. Ambien without the controlled release formula would only work for 4-5 hours.
Maybe we should contact the makers of Ambien and Lunesta to see if they can help eliminate the halitosis side effect. The other option is to find a mouthwash that eliminates the bad taste and halitosis.
Lunesta + water = sleep
posted by Liz on 27 Nov 2005 at 2:02 am
I've been taking lunesta for a week now and at first I couldn't get past the taste AND it didn't seem to make me sleepy.
I was waiting for the knock down 'punch' that ambien gives you. I've found that lunesta does not knock you out, it rocks you gently to sleep.
I've also found that if you drink a FULL glass of water with the pill the bad taste was gone for me, but others I know who have used it said it was still there but not as bad as before.
I also think drinking lots of water helps the pill work, because afterwards I fell asleep much fast and stayed asleep for 7 hours and did not feel groggy in the morning.
This was my experience, but it works differently for everyone. But before you turn your back on it completely try drinking lots of water.
happy sleeping ;)
Ambien CR longer to fall asleep
posted by Joe Boyd on 04 Dec 2005 at 2:53 pm
I have been taking regular Ambien (10mg) probably for almost 2 yrs. I just started, last night, taking Ambien CR (12.5mg) and I swear it took longer for me to get to sleep compared to the 10 mg regular dose. I wonder how much Ambien is released immediately? I wonder if something less than 10mg is released immediately? Anyone have any experience with this? Or know where I can find this kind of detail. Thanks much!
Taste is bad Sleep is good

Yeah I know the taste is nasty but the sleep is really good. Ambien used to give a euphoric feeling before I finally crashed. Almost like a high. Lunesta just gives me sleep.

Ambien vs cr vs lunesta
posted by Raelea on 12 Dec 2005 at 4:40 am
I started out with 10mg of ambien that would put me to sleep but would wake up frequently. My doctor had me try out lunesta and that lasted two days. The sleep wasn't any better and that awful taste. Now I take Ambien cr and it works miracles. I go to sleep and stay asleep. Good luck to all
Gum

I've found that chewing a strong tasting gum after taking your pill gets rid of bitter taste fast. It's worth a shot. Hopefully it works for you all.
Lunesta better than nothing
posted by Bonnie on 17 Dec 2005 at 1:13 am
I, too, have been on Ambien going on two years (up to 10 mg), and my Dr. decided to try switching me to Lunesta to avoid any potential addiction problems. Oh my goodness. The awful taste started after taking it at 10:00 p.m. last night (with a full glass of water), and I still have that awful taste in my mouth at 4:00 p.m. the next day. The delightful taste I'm enjoying is not at all metallic, though; something more like dirty socks. So I've had some dirty sock eggs, a dirty sock glass of milk, a dirty sock sandwich.... you get the idea. Water, gum, juice, hard candy, mouthwash -- nothing brings more than a few seconds relief, and then the dirty socks are back with a vengeance.
Taking Lunesta is better than nothing, but fortunately there are other options out there. Hopefully I'll be able to sleep AND avoid eating dirty socks every day.
So far, Ambien's best!
Tried them all

I have just recently tried Ambien CR. (12.5mg). I don't feel it works as well as the 10 mg. regular Ambien. It takes longer to get sleepy, and I never really sleep soundly. Slept much lighter, and felt I could not really get to sleep. I usually sleep 4-5 hr. from taking something else...and take ambien after I wake up in order to sleep an additional 1 1/2- 3 hrs. or so.
I tried Lunesta. The metalic taste is horrible, no matter how much water you drink or gum you chew. The metal taste stays in my mouth for aprox 10 hours after taking it. So, if I take it at 6-7 am to get 1 or 2 more hours of sleep, that taste lasts all day. I think it works better as a diet pill. I don't want to eat or drink certain foods, since it makes me gag to try to do so. I love eggnog this time of year...and even one little sip of that is like drinking liquid metal. Yuck!
I have only tried the 2mg Lunesta. If I tried 3mg, would the metalic taste be even stronger? Or last longer? Wish they would come up with one I could get at least 6- 7 hrs. of straight sleep, minus the metalic flavor that lingers all day. Plus, not need to be addicted to.
