Experience

posted by SAM on 27 Jun 2011 at 4:19 pm

I have had this severely with my two children. My mother had this only with her second out of five children. A more accurate word for how you feel while itchy is "insane". You feel like your going crazy because you are up all night scratching to the point of bleeding with no premanent relief. Coolness helps only slightly. It was worse with my first child who was born almost 3 weeks early-naturally. She had jaundice and was put under the blue light. My second pregnancy I was already on dexamethazone for a hormone inbalance and it still happened but not to the same extreme. The child was born 3 days late and fine.

cholestasis - not in family but I got it with my son

posted by chocolate on 04 Nov 2011 at 8:05 pm

No one in my family has ever had this before, but I got it with my son! It was the most horrible itching ever! I was going crazy! My son was induced AT 38 WEEKS. He was not ready to come, but wa healthy until later they said he as well had high liver biles and they did a liver biopsy and said nothing wrong with his liver and so now he is 11 months and has to have routine blood work to check the liver. I hope with my next baby it is better :)

Anti-Itch Creams May Help

posted by Bartol on 20 Dec 2011 at 11:53 pm

I agree ursodeoxycholic acid is the first choice in intrahepatic cholestasis.

One woman said the Gold Bond body powder, calamine lotion and keeping herself busy helped her.

Here's a detailed article about safe and category C (to avoid) anti-itch creams and oral medications:

Itchy during second pregnancy

posted by Angela on 22 Jan 2012 at 4:59 am

I had this with my second child. I thought I would go insane itching and scratching all night. I tried everything to relieve it. Finally I decided to take Benadryl per my midwifes suggestion. I only took it for three days at half a dose (I was reluctant to take it) and it did help me sleep a little better. My OB staff had never had anyone have cholestasis before. I was induced at 39 weeks and my daughter did have jaundice but I wasn't aware at the time that cholestasis could cause that to be. Makes sense though.

Get a serum bile test!

posted by Rebecca on 22 Jan 2012 at 2:56 pm

This early on, ICP would be rare, but don't hesitate to get a serum bile test done! It usually has to be mailed to a lab, and takes up to a two weeks to get results, so go ahead and request one. Your Dr will probably say you don't need the test, it's just dry skin, etc, but what is the harm in doing the test? Rare does not mean impossible!

Experience - cholastasis of pregnancy

posted by Kelly on 10 Feb 2012 at 12:29 pm

I had this on my first daughter and wasnt told that it was the reason I was induced at 36 weeks. Only later I found out that I actually had OC. My bile acid levels were at 15. This time round with my second daughter I have been monitored closely for it, my Bile Acids have gone from 8 to 14 in a week but only the last two nights the itching has been unbearable so if you are at risk of it then dont risk waiting until the itching is bad. Urge your midwife to keep a close eye on your LFT's and Bile Acids.

RE: itchy hands&feet am 6wks pregnant

When I and my mother had this our livers were not in danger, it is the baby that is and was born jaundice.
Something that helped me during my time was once I was don't showering, cool the water right down. The coolness subsides the itch. I use to have to stand a lot in front of a fan as well. The better my baby nursed once born, the fast it went away (6 weeks with the first, shorter with the second). From my reading the doctors should be doing tests on the mothers liver while preg. to keep an eye on the levels...see also: http://www.wdxcyber.com/npreg01.htm
