Lyrica combined with other meds for Fibromyalgia pain
posted by Michelle on 27 Feb 2006 at 3:54 pm
I have been taking Lyrica for just a few weeks now for Fibromyalgia pain, and it does help somewhat, in combination with other pain medicine. I have been able to reduce the amount of other pain meds with the Lyrica, but Lyrica, alone, does not take my pain away where I can be productive.

I have been on Lyrica 250 mg a day plus 120 mg of Cymbalta. I also take 7.5 mg of Viccodin 2 x's a day. I tan 3 times a week, not for the color but for the deep heat I get. I have been diagnosed w/fibro for 2 almost 3 years now.. The Lyrica/Cymbalta combo is suppose to help with the nerve pain. It does calm it down but at times it just isn't enough. I am glad to hear that some of you have relief with it. I just don't some days. I also live in a cold damp climate and I think this has lots to do with the way my body reacts.

It is now 2007 and I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 1991 so I have had it for 16 years. I learned to push the pain to the back of my mind and forget about it but the older I get (age 52) the more it does not want to go to the back but wants to come out in full force.
I had a flare up almost 2 weeks ago that caused me not to be able to do anything for 4 days and my knee was the size of a Basketball. I went to the doctor and he put me on Lyrica and Naproxen. I take 75mg of Lyrica and 500 mg of Naproxen twice a day for the first week then 150mg of Lyrica and the Naproxen starting the second week.
It doesn't seem to be doing much other than making me dizzy, and making me feel like I am drunk all the time. So much that I cannot drive my car. It does seem to help me sleep at night but not to the point that I dream so I don't feel that I am healing. I am going to give it a month and see what happens. I have never found anything that helps and believe me I have tried everything in 16 years.

I couldn't handle the lyrica. It did not work and caused dizziness, weight gain (still have not lost) and more anxiety. I have had fibro for 10 years. I also have other multiple chronic pain issues. I take Mobic 7.5, visteril, valium and the occasional ultram for pain. hope this helps someone
Look In The Lyrica Side Effects Posts

I also have FMS and I posted about the Lyrica on the other discussion. It hasn't shown up yet, and it was pretty long, so I don't know if they will put it in or not...... but you should go there and look for some of your answers.
And yes, all the symptoms you speak of are common side effects. However, I do know that many people are HELPED by this medication, many more than are posting here, which seems to be just for people who are having negative effects and need answers. But I can say that for me, the good far outweighs the bad! Lyrica has made a HUGE difference in my pain levels - both in a very short amount of time as well as on a very low dose - much lower than most. I am only taking 50mg/2x a day. Many take 300mg/3x a day or more.
So, don't give up. Try different approaches. You might just find one that works for you.
Good luck!

I just started taking lyrica 2 days ago, starting at 50mg a day at night and working up to 150 mg a day in 2 weeks from now and honestly, in two days, I’ve seen a difference. I have been dealing with fibro pain for a year and a half now and this is the only thing that has really helped me throughout a whole day. Other things that helped were active release technique - a massage therapy that specific certified chiropractors perform. I’m scared about the weight gain aspect of lyrica though, hoping I don't find that to be true.
Relief From Lyrica

I am 61 years old and was diagnosed with Fribo 25 years ago. the treatment I received was Valium. I was taking it for 5 years it did help with my sleeping but that was all. I gave up the Valium and for the last 20 years I have being trying to live with the pain. and not doing the things that cause the greats pain.
Every day has been the same, wake up with pain and go to bed with pain I have taken a lot of pain killers when the pain has being really bad.About 3 weeks ago I heard about Lyrica while watching T.V At that time I was having a bad bout of pain especially in both my arms I saw my doctor and ask him about Lyrica. I have being taking them for 5 days.
What a change in my life. I haven`t taken a pain killer and my muscles are not paining anymore. I am a new person i am able to curl my hair again and today I was play ball with my grandson. I am so happy I know that whatever life sends my way I know I will be able to handle it.My worse fear is that this will not last.as for not I am enjoying life and doing the things I haven`t being to do in 25 years
Lyrica Worked And Now The Pain Is Back
posted by Holly on 18 May 2008 at 7:22 pm
I have been recently diagnosed with FMS and was given Lyrica to be taken 2 times a day at 50 mg. Within the very first day i felt a difference. The second day i had a small amount of lightheadedness which went away quickly but i was feeling great. I was sleeping better and my joints were not stiff. By the fourth day the pain started to comeback. Now it is the 6th day and my insomnia has returned and the pain is slowly coming back. Does anyone know if this is normal? Also, i had a slight skin irritation for several hours, which went away and since then has not returned. Has anyone else had this happen? If so, please e-mail me at 319holly@comcast.net Thanks a million.

I have been on Lyrica for about 6 months ( 50mg 2xday). The pain initially disappeared but is now back. I found that the 50mg made me groggy and very forgetful. I am supposed to try Cymbalta but I am afraid of the side effects. The Lyrica worked just like all the other meds, but it seems with fibromyalgia your body adjust to all of them
Cymbalta

I had taken Lyrica over 2yrs ago and had horrible weight gain which I still cannot shed. Am considering Cymbalta as this is
supposed to help with body aches, muscle pain & actually cause weight loss. Any opinions here.
I know the Lyrica causes brain fog, tiredness, forgetfulness.
Anyone on Cymbalta and what side effects are you experiencing
Cymbalta

When I tried Cymbalta, it worked very well. I have had fibromyalgia for 4 years. The only problem was that it made my hair fall out. I tried taking other medications/vitamins, etc to counteract this problem, but nothing worked. It's a shame, too because besides narcotics, the Cymbalta was the best thing I ever took for fibro pain.
