GREAT RIFOFF

posted by W.Coup on 22 Sept 2011 at 9:53 pm

The only thing this will accomplish is more $$$$ in the pockets of doctors and the prescriptions they push for the drug companies.

Everybody should explore the option I have done - BUY offshore meds and screw our government that seems to think we can't manage our own health care.

How's it feel to have FREE TRADE when companies can't outsource jobs.

Bet the Chamber of Commerce won't get behind this!!!!!!

BONUS

My drug is cheaper than Primatene and it's the same thing your doctor will give you.

New inhalers 2x slower, 0.5 the doses, 10x as expensive

posted by Asthmatic on 22 Sept 2011 at 9:56 pm

this completes the sweep moving asthmatics from fast acting, cheap, reliable medication, to slow acting prescriptions.

The amount of CFC's released by the world's asthma sufferers' inhalers is nominal. This is just a painfully cynical money play.

If the new inhalers at least acted as fast as the old, at least it wouldn't harm those who are insured.

But since the new prescription inhalers take minutes longer, Shame, shame on the people who promoted this, and their FDA stooges. May they someday know the pain and fear of waiting minutes for asthma medication to work!

Who is kidding who

posted by Tawanna on 22 Sept 2011 at 10:15 pm

As an asthma sufferer, the small amount of propellant from inhalers could not possibly hurt the ozone layer! So what's important, someone being able to breathe or government regulation to "protect" the air. Ludicrous!

Where are the FDA's Priorities?

posted by Jesse on 23 Sept 2011 at 2:27 pm

What good is it to protect the air we breathe, if people cannot breathe? There are far worse pollutants, yet it would appear they are more profitable. This is classic case of the FDA aligning their priorities with big pharama and not the 1-2 million people who rely on their medication. Its far too reminiscent of the Vioxx incident.

What?

Dr Chowderhead Recommends that if asthma sufferers such as myself who DEPEND on Primatene Mist to speak to a specialist for alternative treatments??? Why the hell can the "Brain Surgeon" figure out that the reason most people use the product because they....

.......Don't have health insurance in the first place!!!!!!!!???

Big pharma strikes again, and look out in a shocking surge of asthma related deaths in the upcoming year.

conspiracy - banning primatene mist

posted by george on 08 Oct 2011 at 5:07 am

it looks like the FDA doesn't know much about the product they are banning. the primatene mist is inhaled threrfore none of the florocarbons are released into the atmosphere, they are absorbed into a persons body. that being the case, there aren't any reasons to ban this product!!!!!!!!! can't anyone in the government get anything right? or is a pharma cover-up for robbing the public that depend on primatene??????!!!!!!!!!

Because CFCS Kill people all the time!

posted by Tymon on 18 Oct 2011 at 5:45 pm

Yes! Let's ban this product! Because CFCs kill people all the time, and no one has ever died due to an asthma attack at all right? In case you didn't know, that's sarcasm folks. This decision is ridiculous. I'm one of the people that use this product for emergencies simply because I cannot afford the 80+ dollar doctor visit plus an 80+ dollar prescription due to lack of health insurance. So... before the ban I have two choices. a 25 dollar rescue inhaler, or a 160 dollar rescue inhaler. Considering the 'prescription' one is over six times more expensive than the primatene mist, I don't think it's a tough call which I can afford.

absurd greed and cruelty

posted by al davis on 20 Nov 2011 at 7:47 pm

this is a ridiculous and cruel decision to take a product off the market before an alternative is offered and people need it when they need it..............the absurdity is the FDA's first concern is supposed tobe public health and well-being

Alternative Is Not Adrenaline

posted by narek on 23 Nov 2011 at 1:24 pm

This is a horrible nightmare for people like me! The supposed solution is switching to Alberterol or Levalbuteral products, which is a beta 2 adrenergic agonist. Primatene Mist is adrenaline, very different from Albuterol.

I can't use Albuterol products because I get a paradoxical reaction, which means, it gives me asthma and eventually, about a week, causes my lungs to completely close! This is a frightening experience to say the least!

In my latest drug book and all of my older ones, it lists as possible, Adverse reactions for Albuterol, among others, Respiratory: PARADOXICAL BRONCHOSPASM. It not so for Primatene Mist!

I've written letters to doctors and the FDA and The American Lung Association. The FDA, after many letters, finally responsed saying it was up the the drug company to develop a safer product. So the FDA leaves the value of my life in the hands of a drug company that cares mostly about the bottom line..money.

If this is my dillemma, I'm sure there are many others falling through the cracks in the 21st century. And how in the world would a rescue inhaler be causing destruction to the ozone when it is sprayed in the mouth?

This will ruin my life and maybe kill me..I hope someone in charge of this comes forward and helps people like me!!!

FDA Over Control

posted by Jason Perrin on 04 Dec 2011 at 7:51 pm

I am a very mild asthma sufferer. I use up a Primatene mist inhaler in the course of over a year. So now instead of spending 15 dollars a year or so I now have to spend the cost of a doctor visit and the cost of a prescription. Right now I don't have health insurance but I can still afford it, but what about the people that can't. This is a ridiculous decision by the FDA.

Really??!!!!

posted by Charlotte Barnes on 06 Dec 2011 at 11:47 pm

This is ridiculous. I use the primatene mist and it lasts me longer than an albuterol simply because it works better. I don't understand why they are putting a ban on an inhaler that could be damaging to the ozone (never mind that it actually helps people who cannot afford prescriptions and doctor visits) yet they allow drugs that are addictive, mind altering, deadly, or just drive you to commit suicude. (pain killers, anti-depressants, barbituates, cough syrups, asthma medication, quit smoking aids....the list goes on.) I guess the bottom line is, it is all about that beautiful dollar and the accumulation of such. Why can't people be allowed to choose what medicine they use to combat their own disease when it comes to this. REALLY??!!!!

It's not about CFC, its about controlling Ephedrine

posted by William on 10 Dec 2011 at 10:14 am

My mother died of an asthma related heart-attack, and my brother (without health insurance as of Jan 2012) relies on Primatine Mist to stay alive.

As a chemist by schooling, I can attest to the fact that CFC's are NOT released into the atmosphere if the product is used properly, they are inhaled into the lungs and absorbed by the body. The CFC B*S* is just the "legal angle" used by FDA to achieve a "quiet" ban of the product.

The real reason for this ban is the same reason Sudafed was moved behind-the-counter, eventually regulated/rationed, and soon will be banned completely.... Yes, the reason is our government's desire to remove Ephedrine from the face of the planet because someone, somewhere might be using Primatine Mist to produce Meth!

It is a very sad day in our country where we as citizens / tax-payers allow our government to regulate us out of existence in the name of "safety and protection". What's next? Requiring farmers to procure a BATF license prior to obtaining fertilizer because it "might" be used for explosives....

As any ER doctor can tell you, the fastest way to quell an asthma attack in the ER is to inject Ephedrine/adrenalin. Other meds don't work as fast, or are as reliable!

I agree with others... the prescription meds don't work as fast or as well, cost multiple times more, require a Dr AND Specialist visit each time you need refills, and they have more dangerous side-effects than OTC Primatine.

Pissed Off - FDA Bans Primatene Mist The Ephedrine / CFC Based Asthma Inhaler

posted by Rosco on 30 Dec 2011 at 6:07 am

What a crock!!
When you use and inhaler where does all the stuff go? In your lungs! This is just another example of how STUPID and out of touch our government officials are. The moron who says "go to your health care provider" must live in a glass bubble. The unemployment rate is high. Many people dont have a job or they dont have any health care coverage. I know many people who are working more than one part time job. They cannot afford the cost of the inhalers that are not sold accross the counter. So...because of some poorly thought out agreement they are going to put people at risk.

Im so tired of these bumbling mornons we elect. In the next election anyone who is an incumbant is NOT getting my vote. Time to clean house. However, that would increase the amount of people unemployed. I am a small business owner and I would never hire a politician. I swear thes nuckle heads work in DC because they cant get a job in corporate America.

what about the real CFC's

posted by brian on 03 Jan 2012 at 8:07 pm

Wow, whoever thought this up is stupid? I can buy a 12 ounce can of r-12 refrigerant on ebay for $20 and dont need a licence stating that I am trained in the use of it, as is required by section 609 of the federal clean air act. That is correct 12oz of CFC-12. Yet I cannot buy a 1/2 oz. primatene mist inhailer to save my life because it will damage the environment. CFC-12 is 100% Chlorofluorocarbon. Primatene Mist uses CFC as a propellant. My opinion, I hope whoever thought this up dies gasping for breath.

BS

posted by Bruce on 04 Jan 2012 at 1:51 pm

When the proffessor who protored my cfc certification many years ago, tells me right up front that the cfc ban is a crock of crap. cfc's are heavier than air, plus their is no real long term study that can prove that the ozone does not expand and contract over time, we haven't even known anout the ozone long enough to make an educated, even guess, that cfc's affect the ozone.. It is money,,taxes, and profits. When this come out of the mouth of a proffessor I put more stock in his expertise than I do a politicians greedy desire to use inside trading to make sure they know who to invest in.. I need this product, if they want to change propellant, go for it, but don't just pull it off the counter,, and yes, the least expensive replacement is out of my budget, that is if I want to eat.

There may be hope for us...

posted by Rene on 01 Feb 2012 at 2:57 pm

all who use Primatene Mist. I've contacted Armstrong Pharmaceuticals (800-423-4136) and they have petitioned the FDA succesully to re-introduce a CFC free version of Primatene mist. Armstrong has the capability to be able to remanufacture a new version of Primatene without a CFC propellant.

However, a time frame as to when the FDA will grant the company clearance to start manufacturing the new primatene Mist is unknow. Armstrong says it could be a mid 2012, the end of the year or even a year or two!! This is clearly not acceptable to us who rely on Epinephrine for our Asthma! That's the bad news. The FDA is notorious in dragging it's feet in granting approval on such petitions.

Call the FDA in Washington DC at 888-463-6332 and tell them to please grant swift approval to Armstrong on this issue.

BS....more money is what it is all about

posted by Brandi on 10 Feb 2012 at 10:10 pm

I thought, well if the prescribed inhaler works, great. It doesn't Makes my husband sick. Doesn't work the same...really crappy. We would add it to the cost of living. It's pure S**t that they are doing this. My dh only uses it during the brutal cold. He uses one inhaler about every 6 months..@ 12.00.
Now we have to go to the emergency room tomorrow, cause he broke his inhaler tonight...so add up that cost for him to simply breathe. Walk in clintics...don't deal with asthma.

What About Diesel Fuel and Wood Burning?

posted by narek on 20 Apr 2012 at 9:16 pm

Since the FDA is so worried about the quality of the air, which especially effects people like me with asthma, why is it legal to burn wood and use diesel fuel for large vehicles, which create tons of particulate matter to be deposited in the air?

When I'm around either, I immediately get an asthma attack. And why can't I find any proof that Primatene Mist, which is sprayed in the mounth, is actually getting into the air?

This is wrong! People like me get a paradoxical reation to Albuterol and Levalbuterol. They give me asthma. Primatene Mist is a rescue inhaler..I need it to live! And no one can help me with this! It's cruel!
