As an anesthetic: how many exposures

posted by Dbweeks on 14 Nov 2011 at 3:57 pm

This compound, though not popular, was used in millions of patients as an anesthetic. How many of those were affected? I know of only one anesthesiologist: are there others?

parkinsons / downs syndrome

posted by brenda franzen on 14 Nov 2011 at 10:48 pm

My father was a parkinsons victim and I have a son with downs syndrome.

We have an older male friend with parkinsons, his granddaughter has downs syndrome.

His granddaughter has a male friend with downs syndrome and his grandfather has parkinsons. I can't help but believe there must be a link here.

Drs do not listen.

Thirty years ago while in the navy we used TCE on rags to wipe down oily surfaces, went thru buckets of it. For last 25 years I've worked in semiconductor maufacturing repairing and cleaning machines, exposed to lots of solvents and toxics. Two of my uncles had parkinsons. Started having gait and vison problems >5 years ago. Now after 3 spine surgeries this year, can barely walk, speech problems and shake a lot. Drs tell me I may have a movement disorder or maybe just need a good psychiatrist.
These articles are interesting but have little to do with what I have experienced when dealing with Drs. They do not care about the chemical exposure.

Yes TCE was used and still is.

posted by Ether Doc on 11 Feb 2012 at 3:15 pm

TCE was used extensively as an anestheic from the 1930s through the 1970s and millions of patients were exposed to much much higher amounts that are currently in groundwater. It was replaced eventually by halothane since halothane was simply a better anesthetic. Apparently TCE is still used in Africa.
