Osteochondritis Patient
posted by Evana on 19 Dec 2011 at 11:40 amI am a 21 yr old female who has been involved in competitive sports for my entire life. Last year, I developed knee pain literally overnight after a long run. The pain was mild, but I do remember a distinct moment where I jumped down from my bunk bed, perhaps it was in that moment that I triggered a traumatic catalyst of my dissecan in my left knee. I have since had an MRI and confirmed case of a 9mmx9mm dissecan on the lateral facet of the back of my knee cap. The dull pain has stayed constant since April (when I first felt the ache) and I have consistently been physically active since then. Recently, however, it has been swelling. Could it be that over time this condition is silently worsening? What methods should I be aware of in its conservative treatment, and is there any chance this could heal over time? Any advice or insight whatsoever would be extremely helpful as this is a rare condition, so guidance has been hard to come across!

I AM THE MOTHER OF A 9 YR OLD SON WHO HAS COMPLAINED OF LEG PAINS,OFF AND ON, SINCE HE WAS 4 OR 5 YEARS OLD. WE HAD GONE TO HIS DOCTOR, TO AN ORTHOPAEDIC, TO THE EMERGENCY ROOMS NUMEROUS TIMES AND HAD XRAYS DONE ONLY TO HEAR THE SAME RESULTS,--"ALL HIS TESTS CAME OUT FINE, WE DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING". I WAS RELIEVED, BUT, MY CHILD WAS STILL IN PAIN. I WAS TOLD IT WAS JUST GROWING PAINS SO I WENT WITH THAT DIAGNOSIS. IN JANUARY 2012 HE WAS HAVING REALLY BAD PAINS TO THE POINT WHERE HE COULDN'T STAND AND IN TEARS. SINCE WE HAD MOVED TO ANOTHER STATE I TOOK HIM TO A NEW ORTHOPAEDIC DOCTOR, WHERE XRAYS OF HIS LEGS AND KNESS WERE DONE AND IMMEDIATELY DISCOVERED HE HAS OSTEOCHONDRITIS DISSECANS. HE HAD AN MRI DONE WHICH CONFIRMED THAT DIAGNOSIS. HE IS NOW IN A FULL CAST, SO PRAYFULLY THIS WILL CORRECT THE BONE IS HIS KNEE, THEN HE HAS TO HAVE A CAST ON THE OTHER LEG. SO, I SAY TO ALL PARENTS GET A 2ND OR EVEN 3RD OPINION BECAUSE MY SON SUFFERED WITH PAIN FOR 5 YEARS BECAUSE OF A MISDIAGNOSIS.

I am a freashman in high school, and i have this condition. Mine however was almost stage 4. I had to have to MAJOR surgeries on both of my knees. I was an awsome soccer player, and loved to run. I suffered moonths before my parents took me to a doctor. I have not been able to do normal physical activity for over 2 yrs. I can't even carry a backpack. My surgeries have no gurrentee:(. I pray for anyone that had to even go through a minor case of it heals and never has to go through what I am going through. I dreamed of being on my school soccer team since i was 7. Get it checked out what ever joint, what ever degree of pain!!

Im 12 yeAr years old and I've had this for 3 years now
And had the same misdiagnosis that it was just growing pains
Finally 8 months ago, I found out I had OCD in my left ankle where it
Has been hurting. I wore a cast for 9 weeks, and a boot for 7 weeks. On my next MRI, my ankle did not improve at all. The doctor also noticed I jave developed a sist in the back of the joint as well. I have been dealing with this for a while now and it is a very frustrating condition. I am scheduled to have surgery later next week. I hope it works because I've missed my baseball, football, basketball, and hockey seasons for the past two years. Im a little nervous, but I'm also hopeful that this will be over once and for all
my son had surgery on his knee in dec 2011

my son had surgery on his knee in dec 2011. he is doing very well! Thank God! make sure you participate in your health by asking lots of questions of the doctor and also do your own research and get a second opinion. my son was on the cpm machine which i thought was great, and is now doing pt daily and also going to the pool 3 times a week. he will be able to play sports again real soon. to the 12yr old who missed your sports season. you will play again and at a high level. just make sure you do your pt everyday after surgery when it is time to do so, and believe that you will do well. you are only 12 so you have a lot to look forward to including playing high school sports. my son missed his entire 11th grade bball season but kept a good attitude and will be playing this summer and in the fall of his senior year. ocd can be beat!
Success story after surgery

I was a competitive athlete through my 20s and had never had a serious injury. In my 30s, during a silly exercise for a class I was taking in 2005, I twisted my right knee. It was swollen for a day or two and it never felt quite right after it healed. I had to limit my activities and exercise because my knee pain would flare up any time I did something too strenuous. I suffered for 4 1/2 years until one Sunday my knee just blew up and I couldn't walk. I had an MRI which showed a Grade 2 OCD. My orthopedic surgeon recommended arthroscopic surgery to repair the defect. In April 2010 I went under the knife! The defect was cleaned up and drilled for revascularization. I was on crutches for 6 weeks, had physical therapy for 3 months, was not allowed to run and play for 6 months as the cartilage healed. Slowly, I have returned to physical activity. I'm currently training for a sprint distance triathlon this May, two years after my surgery. The knee feels normal! Now my left knee is starting to hurt a bit... Similar pain to how the right knee felt. It wouldn't surprise me if left knee is starting to go :( I may have to realize that age is catching up to me at 40... I had a good run, now I should enjoy watching the kids play! The surgery was worth it for me, I have no more pain or swelling in my right knee, but I think it's key to let it heal properly after the surgery.

I am 11 years old and I was diagnosed with OCD 6 months ago.
In 2011 I was experiencing really bad pain on my left and right knee, such as clicking, locking etc. I went to at least 3 different physiotherapists and they all said it was just growing pain and also Severs Disease and just gave me excersizes to do which didn't help. Anyway the pain was getting worse and worse so bad I could barely walk without my knee giving way:( November last year I went to a specialist where he said I had to have an MRI in my right knee, until I came back 3 months later I wasn't allowed to do any sport at all. Unfortunately I did have it in my left and right and still can't do anything:( hopefully after that 6 months I had, in 2 months time I'll be back to normal! Being the way it is though probably not and ill have to have yet another 3 months;( if you have any suggestions that would be fantastic because it is rare
