Ambien and back problems

posted by D. Shields on 08 July 2006 at 11:08 am

I have taken ambien on three occasions. The day following the evening that I took Ambien, my lower back hurts - a LOT. I am for the most part healthy and have no other type of back problems. Because of this I may not take Ambien anymore.

My husband recently passed away. In the days following his passing, I could not sleep. I took 1/2 of his Ambien tablets three days in a row. My back and up my spine is aching. This not normal for me which is why a searched for similar experiences on the web. Hmmmm.

Back Pain After Ambien

posted by Hilda Simmons on 17 Jan 2007 at 9:05 am

I was having trouble going to sleep at night, so I took only 1/4 of an Ambien tablet. After about 3 nights of doing this I had such major pain in my lower back, I felt like I could break in half if I bent the wrong way.

I see from this site that other people have experienced similar problems. My husband has also experienced the same problem after taking only 1/4 tablet.

Ambien 5mg

posted by Dennis Binder on 04 Feb 2007 at 8:42 pm

I have not had any back problems and I have been taking it for about 2 years.
I have only had a muscle pain in my back when I twist to reach back for something. Kind of like an immediate "charlie horse".

Me Too, Back Pain

posted by Mimi on 03 Apr 2007 at 12:15 pm

I've always had back pain, intermittently (spelling?) but didn't associate it with the Ambien.

I'm glad all of you folks posted. Now I'll watch closely, keep a record.

I've taken Ambien since last May & am concerned about getting off it.

What Is The Chemistry?

posted by troy on 23 May 2007 at 9:56 pm

I injured lower back (L5-S1) in an accident. I took ambien prior to the accident and never noticed any back pain. Over the course of the last 9 months i have gotten 3 ambien prescriptions and , consistently, the excruciating pain begins the morning of the 3rd application and worsens throughout the day! What does ambien have in it that does what it does to exascerbate(sp) the pain and what are the alternatives?

Educated Guess

posted by Gabrielle Adams on 08 Jun 2007 at 6:41 pm

I'm betting the back pain stems from being so heavily sedated that you don't move around and change positions during sleep, like you normally would. I refuse to take Ambien due to other side effects, but I have had that effect from other sleep aids.

Updates?

posted by Anon on 23 July 2007 at 4:07 pm

If anyone is still watching this thread, has anyone actually tried to stop taking it? I have severe muscle pains but (think) they were there beforehand. I have been on ambien for about 5 years so it's not all that easy for me to just stop and see.

If anyone has tried stopping, i would be really really interested in hearing what happened. thank you.

Back Pain With Ambien

posted by Joe on 14 Aug 2007 at 7:09 pm

I am now off Ambien CR 4 weeks - My back pain is gone - I don't know why and I have asked 2 Doctors - They can't explain it either - I am staring to think it if not the back - It may be related related to the Kidneys - Whatever it was I am off it and I feel 95% better - I now go to sleep and hope for the best - (The withdrawl was horrible - BUT it was worth it - I can walk around all day - no back belt and not be miserable from the pain) - If you listen to the TV commercial carefully - It warns you about back and kidney pain - I see a nice class action suit coming - I hope so - This stuff is nasty

Definate Return To Back Pain With Ambien

posted by Lori on 20 Aug 2007 at 8:55 pm

I started taking ambien to help me sleep during chemotherapy difficulties. I have been taking ambien every day until it runs out , which puts me at about 2 weeks where I must take advil PM. During this time my backpain was all but elliminated. znow I can get ambian again, and it does allow me to sleep really well. But the return of my abdominal pain and back pain is harsh. Does anyone know what causes this?

Dwight

posted by Dwight Turner on 13 Oct 2007 at 12:29 pm

I am 61 years old and have a degenerated disk that has caused pain for several years. I tried extra strength aspirin, aleve, and several prescribed pain medications (percocet, tramadol, hydrocodone), but they only make me nauseous and have pounding headaches.

As each day progressed, the pain level in my back would increase to the point that I could hardly sleep at night. My doctor prescribed Ambien CR (12.5 mg). I take the Ambien at around 9 AM, and slowly the back pain subsides. I go to bed at 10 PM and the pain is gone. Ambien is the only thing I have found that takes my back pain away. I mentioned this to my doctor just this week, and he was puzzled as to why Ambien works when all the other stuff I've had prescribed for pain did not. I hope to have by back problem fixed with surgery, but until then, I rely on Ambien for pain relief. I can't take it during working hours, but my back pain does not usually kick in real bad until around quitting time. Then I just have to bear the pain until near bedtime.

Chemo Sister

I found this site while searching for the best way to go off Ambein Cr. I developed cronic low back and arm pain shortly after starting the drug and had never associated it with the pain. It is interesting. Does anyone have advice on whether I should go cold turkey. They say that you shouldn't cut them is half, so perhaps just quiting is the solution.

Ambien

posted by sammy on 10 Nov 2007 at 9:36 am

I have been taking ambien cr for about 3 mos. now. I have chronic neck pain and have been to chiropractor, physical therapy, orthopedic specialist, mri done, and cortisone shot in my neck. I started searching ambien and pain, and found this site. My neck pain started about the same time as I started taking the ambien. Could this be related?
Thanks.

Ambien Pain

posted by JUSO on 15 Nov 2007 at 1:07 am

I've been having terrible pain in my back, more specifically my lower ribs. I was on Ambien for about a year and the pain kept getting worse. A few times in those months I ran out and had insurance company problems getting my prescription refilled. I noticed that within 2 days of being off the Ambien the pain subsided tremendously. By the third day it was almost gone. Of course I couldn't sleep during those days, so it took me 3-4 times where this happened to figure out it was the Ambien. While the pill is in my system, I feel fine. I suspect it is a withdrawl symptom. As the day progresses, the pain gets worse because it’s been longer and longer since taking the pill.

I went on Lunesta, HORRIBLE for my taste buds! But I slept. After a few months on the Lunesta the back pain returned. I stopped it for a few days and again, the pain subsided until it stopped. Now I have to decided every night on which is worse, the lack of sleep, or the back pain.

BTW, I have a sleep disorder, which is why I started taking the sleep meds in the first place.

Ambien Back Pain

posted by Anthony R.Ph on 17 Nov 2007 at 3:11 pm

Back pain is listed as a side effect for Ambien and Ambien CR at 3 and 4% respectivly. As another poster said I suspect it is because you are in such a sound sleep that you stay in one position too long.

Ambien

posted by paula on 17 Nov 2007 at 4:04 pm

Went from doctor to doctor because of suffering with extreme clear mucus buildup. Kept blowing my nose and coughing up the mucus just for it all to return in a few minutes. I had terrible pain in my ribs and my back as well as my whole body was swollen. No one could find what was wrong. One day i asked the doc if they thought it could be the ambien and she said no. I decided to stop the ambien anyway and see for myself. Of course I got no sleep but also lost all the mucus, pain and swelling within 3 days. So there you go....I was allergic to Ambien.

Ambien Back Pain

posted by anaon on 21 Nov 2007 at 2:52 pm

Well i am amazed to find all these 'opinions' consistent with my experience. Of course it was desperation of the unexplained backpain that was the catalyst for my googling "ambien back pain". I've been taking ambien for sleep disorder for two years, and in that time have had to give up the gym and gained over 20lbs. I thought the weight gain was the cause...although it came after...so now assume it was the effect! I look back and remember very soon after starting ambien I had a terrible constant bloated feeling - now I associate with 'stiff back'.

And since suffered aching back pain - without injury - which has become worse and more prolonged. What's always confused me is that I can 'walk it off', if I have the time and can summon up the motivation - through the pain.

I've been explaining to a friend for over a year that I wake up like a rodeo rider, I remember Robert Redford in the film with Jane Fonda when he had to get up slowly stretching his joints:) But that's me! Ambien's so effective that it becomes very addictave - at least mentally dependant. But after reading this I'm going to quit taking it...tiredness was never as bad as feeling old and worn out when you're only 48. Wth too much to do to give up yet. Good luck everyone else,

Ambien And Back Pain

posted by Ern Posey on 18 Dec 2007 at 12:30 pm

I began taking 10MG. Ambien every night. I would wake up early due to Severe back pain. Sometimes the pain presisted all day. I beleive it was due to staying in one position for so long or the kidneys not funcioing properly. Or both. So I stoped all toghether and the back pain stoped.

I now swim , arobic exercise , walk 5 miles a week. And I can sleep pretty well.
