World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has announced this year's Fruity Friday will be held on May 16 and it is expected to be the biggest in the history of the annual event.

The idea of Fruity Friday, which is part of Cancer Prevention Week, is to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and to raise funds for WCRF's research and education work.

Schools and businesses will be getting involved and among the celebrities who are backing this year's campaign are TV presenter Sarah Beeny and Arsenal footballer Theo Walcott.

Sarah Beeny said: "By raising awareness of how a healthy diet and lifestyle reduces cancer risk we come a step closer to help preventing this terrible disease. Please help support Cancer Prevention Week and make a difference."

Theo Walcott said: "As a footballer I have to take care of my body. Eating the right foods, maintaining a healthy weight and keeping physically active are not only good for footballers, they're good for everybody, especially at helping reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.

"WCRF's Cancer Prevention Week is a great way of spreading the 'get fit for life' message and that's why I'm right behind it."

Lucie Galice, General Manager for WCRF, said: "It's great that Theo and Sarah have both given their support. Fruity Friday is really important for raising vital funds for our research and education programmes and getting across the message that cancer is a largely preventable disease.

"But it is also a lot of fun and I would urge everybody to get involved. Even if you can only raise a small amount, it can make a real difference in helping us carry on with our vital work."
