The field of cardiology has struggled to address the problems of patients with compromised or diminished cardiovascular function - a population that represents the largest single treatable patient segment in healthcare. New drugs and innovative devices have improved patient quality-of-life, but have done little to decrease mortality and morbidity. Transplantation remains a high-risk procedure with chronic supply and histocompatibility issues.
