Investments announced in the 2008 budget, on March 25, 2008, set the stage for action on childhood obesity and nutrition programs. "We are very pleased with dedicated funding to act on these issues," says Linda Dietrich, Regional Executive Director with Dietitians of Canada. "It shows the government recognizes the importance of nutrition in health. Registered Dietitians are eager to work with the government and other stakeholders to develop comprehensive strategies for school health and community programs that support healthy weights."

Positive effects on nutrition for Ontarians can be expected through announcements in this budget, such as:

- Investments in childhood obesity programs;

- Support for student nutrition programs;

- Access to dietitians through additional Family Health Teams;

- Funding to support consumption of local vegetables and fruit through the Pick Ontario Freshness campaign;

- Poverty reduction strategies;

- Investments in hospice and end of life care;

- Investments in E-health - including a diabetes registry helping people with diabetes manage their condition in conjunction with health care providers.

Nutrition is a key factor in maintaining health, and Dietitians of Canada supports initiatives that increase access to healthy foods and the professional nutrition expertise of Registered Dietitians.

Dietitians of Canada represents almost 6,000 dietitians across Canada. DC is committed to promoting the health and well-being of consumers through food and nutrition.
