Rush University is well represented in the 2009 edition of "America's Best Graduate Schools" survey published in the April 7 issue of U.S. News & World Report magazine. Eight programs in the Rush College of Nursing and three programs in the College of Health Sciences are ranked among the top 25 in the country.
Rush College of Health Sciences earned placement in three disciplines. The Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program is ranked ninth. The Master's in Health System Management program is ranked 25th and the Master's in Speech-Language Pathology program is 18th.
"We are proud to be recognized by our peers for our commitment to preparing superb practitioners and leaders in the allied health professions," said David C. Shelledy, PhD, dean of the College of Health Sciences at Rush University. "It is clear our students benefit from the Rush University practitioner-teacher model of integrating patient care, research, scholarship and service into the teaching-learning process."
Rush College of Nursing is ranked third in the nation for its Master's in Nursing Anesthesia program and 19th for its Master's in Nursing program. The College also received very high marks for nursing specialties earning top ten rankings on six of the eight lists; fifth in Community/Public Health Nursing, sixth in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, ninth in Adult Nurse Practitioner, tenth in Family Nurse Practitioner, ninth in Gerontological/Geriatric Nursing, and seventh in Pediatric Nursing.
"We consider such national scores the natural outcome of our mission to prepare the next generation of nursing leaders," said Melanie C. Dreher, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean, Rush University College of Nursing. "I am deeply grateful to all the faculty members and clinicians in the Medical Center who have contributed to the extraordinary education our students receive."
The graduate health program rankings in U.S. News are based on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline. Respondents rated the academic quality of programs on a 5-point scale. Those schools with the highest average scores appear. The rankings of graduate programs in audiology, and speech-language pathology were newly updated this year and are based on surveys conducted in the fall of 2007.
Nursing specialty rankings were not newly surveyed this year and retain their rankings from last year. These rankings are based on ratings by educators at peer schools. Nursing educators nominated up to 10 schools for excellence in each area. Surveys were conducted by the market research firm Synovate.
"These high rankings demonstrate the mission of Rush University to teach, study and provide the highest quality health care. We continue to improve the University's educational programs to strengthen both our students' futures and the future of health care in the United States," said Dr. Thomas A. Deutsch, provost, Rush University.
Rush University is the academic component of Rush University Medical Center, a leading academic medical center. Rush University was founded in 1972 and has expanded from one college and fewer than 100 students to four colleges and over 1,500 students. It includes Rush Medical College, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences and The Graduate College. The heritage of the College of Nursing dates back to 1885, when the College's first antecedent, the St. Luke's Hospital Training School of Nursing, opened to offer diploma education to nurses.
