American Society For Clinical Pharmacology And Therapeutics Will Honor Award Recipients At Its Annual Meeting In Orlando

The American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) will honor its 2007-2008 award recipients at its 2008 Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, April 2-5, 2008.

ASCPT will honor Marcus M. Reidenberg, MD, Professor, Weill Medical College of Cornell University, with the 2008 Oscar B. Hunter Memorial Award in Therapeutics. The Oscar B. Hunter Memorial Award in Therapeutics recognizes individual scientists for outstanding lifetime contributions to clinical pharmacology and therapeutics. This award was originally given to Jonas E. Salk, MD, in 1955, to honor his groundbreaking contributions in the development of the polio vaccine. Dr. Reidenberg has had a long and distinguished teaching career. More than 130 of his original research articles published in peer-reviewed journals and he currently serves as Chair of the World Health Organization's Expert Panel on the Selection and Use of Essential Medicines.

The 2008 ASCPT Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award recipient is Dan M. Roden, MD, Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology, Vanderbilt University. Dr. Roden will receive the Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award for his significant contributions to drug investigation that incorporate the efforts of modern drug research into patient care. The award will acknowledge Dr. Roden's dedicated research in cardiovascular therapeutics, specifically the adverse effects of different drugs on heart arrhythmia.

Sean Hennessy, PharmD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Pharmacology, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, will receive the 2008 Leon I. Goldberg Young Investigator Award. The Leon I. Goldberg Young Investigator Award recognizes and encourages young scientists who are active in clinical pharmacology. Dr. Hennessy has been hailed as a leader in pharmacoepidemiology research, both nationally and internationally.

Patricia W. Slattum, PharmD, PhD, CGP, Virginia Commonwealth University Associate Professor, is the recipient of the 2008 William B. Abrams Award in Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology. The William B. Abrams Award in Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology honors young investigators who are making outstanding contributions in the field of geriatric clinical pharmacology. Dr. Slattum has made great contributions to the field through her exceptional abilities as a teacher of gerontology and pharmacotherapy. Her research has had a significant impact on the translation of geriatric clinical pharmacology to the elderly population.

Dilip J. Mehta, MD, PhD, has been selected by ASCPT to receive the 2008 Gary Neil Prize for Innovation in Drug Development. The Gary Neil Prize for Innovation in Drug Development aims to stimulate the application of innovative science to clinical drug development by recognizing outstanding individuals or teams that are leaders in this area. While Senior Vice President of U.S. Clinical Research with Pfizer, Dr. Mehta was responsible for clinical research (phase I, II, and III), including the design and implementation of clinical protocols, statistical analyses and data processing, and submissions of New Drug Applications (NDAs). He supervised NDA submissions for many of the company's current top-selling drugs, including Norvasc, Zoloft, Zithromax, Diflucan, and Viagra.

Kathleen Uhl, MD, FAAFP, Assistant Commissioner for Women's Health, Office of Women's Health, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has been selected by ASCPT to receive its 2008 Henry W. Elliott Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Uhl has greatly benefited ASCPT by volunteering her time and talents to the Society. She served as Chair of the Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Pharmacometrics Scientific Section and participated in a variety of committees and task forces. She is currently involved in ASCPT's mentoring program as a mentor and is an Associate Editor for the Society's journal, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

The 2007 ASCPT Young Investigator Award recipient is Candace Y.W. Lee, MD, PhD, FRCPC, FACC, FACP, Senior Research Fellow, Mayo Clinic. The Young Investigator Award supports a fellow in clinical pharmacology or a related field who is engaged in clinical/translational research. Dr. Lee's proposal entitled "Discovery and Development of Novel Designer Natriuretic Peptides for the Treatment of Heart Failure" was selected as the top scientific proposal from a highly competitive group of clinical pharmacology trainees. Support for this award was provided by Amgen in the form of an unrestricted education grant.

New in 2008, ASCPT will award the David J. Goldstein Trainee Award to recognize the highest-scoring abstract submitted for the Annual Meeting. Both earning the same top score, the two 2008 recipients are Bridgette Jones, MD, Children's Mercy Hospital, and Parvaz Madadi, BSc, The University of Western Ontario. In addition to being recognized for outstanding abstracts, they will be awarded the ASCPT Presidential Trainee Award for their outstanding scientific achievement along with 17 of their colleagues.
