Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) will not "soften" the Republican Party's position on abortion ahead of the Republican National Convention, McCain's advisers said recently, the Washington Times reports. According to the Times, McCain's aides said they will not work to change the party's call for a constitutional amendment banning abortions.
According to the Times, the Republican Party's position on abortion is that "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life, which cannot be infringed." In addition, the party's intention is to "have legislative and judicial protection of that right against those who perform abortions," the Times reports. An unnamed McCain aide dismissed a rumor circulating among Republican leaders and advocates that party member Bobby Kilberg would be changing the party's platform ahead of the convention. According to the Times, critics consider Kilberg to be liberal on social issues. The convention is scheduled for September in St. Paul, Minn. (Hallow, Washington Times, 4/2).
