Australia's medical students are asking for major changes in medical training programs.
At a meeting in Hobart the association says increased workloads are undermining the traditional apprenticeship program for students.
Matthew Hutchinson, President of the AMSA (Australian Medical Students Association) says that senior doctors are unable to spend as much time working with students.
Hutchinson said, "Medical education is in risk of going downhill in Australia. What we actually require is for hospitals to set aside funding for core teaching of medical students, rather than that money being absorbed in the day-to-day activities of the hospitals themselves."
