New study results released by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) show the top procedures performed by dermasurgeons are skin cancer repair and reconstruction surgeries.

According to the 2007 Procedure Survey conducted among 3,176 ASDS members, the top five procedures performed by ASDS dermasurgeons were:

-- Skin Cancer Repair and Reconstruction - 2,855,446/year

-- Laser and Light Treatment - 1,359,308/year

-- Botox(R) Injection - 1,323,110/year

-- Soft Tissue Filler Injection - 1,041,802/year

-- Skin Resurfacing - 798,861/year

In addition, the survey results show a significant increase in some of the procedures performed by ASDS members. The top five procedures that increased between 2005 and 2007 were:

-- Skin Lifting - 240 percent increase

-- Botox(R) and Soft Tissue Augmentation - 130 percent increase

-- Non Ablative Skin Rejuvenation - 110 percent increase

-- Skin Cancer - 66 percent increase

-- Resurfacing - 50 percent increase

"Results of this survey show the dramatic increase in the number of procedures that are being performed by dermasurgeons. Equally important, these data also demonstrate that ASDS members are the foremost providers of appearance related and skin cancer procedures," says Darrell Rigel, M.D. president of the ASDS. "When it comes to the serious nature of procedures such as the removal of skin cancer or appearance related concerns, these survey results demonstrate that patients seek the specialized care and training and expertise of dermasurgeons."

With more than 5,000 members, ASDS, founded in 1970, is the largest specialty organization in the world exclusively representing dermasurgeons, board-certified physicians who are specifically trained to treat the health, function and appearance of the skin and soft tissue, with both medically necessary and cosmetic procedures, using both surgical and non-surgical methods.
