French drugs research company Servier, whose UK headquarters is based at Wexham Springs in Berkshire, has announced that as of 1 April 2008 the tert-butylamine salt will be replaced by the arginine salt. Coversyl will be replaced by Coversyl Arginine, containing active ingredients perindopril arginine. Coversyl Plus will be replaced by Coversyl Arginine Plus, containing active ingredients perindopril arginine and indapamade.
Coversyl arginine has a longer shelf-life than Coversyl tert-butylamine. At the revised dosage, (Coversyl arginine 2.5, 5, 10mg/day corresponds to Coversyl tert-butylamine 2, 4, 8mg/day and Coversyl Plus 4mg/1.25mg/day corresponds to Coversyl Arginine Plus 5mg/1.25mg/day), the new salt is bioequivalent to the current salt in terms of efficacy and safety. Healthcare professionals can find more information about the drug at the Servier UK website.
The reason for the change in the UK is the global simplification and harmonisation of the manufacturing process for perindopril. The arginine salt of perindopril is already in use in Australia, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland and some central European Countries and it has brought a number of benefits including an extended shelf life and greater stability.
Servier UK (Servier Laboratories Limited and Servier Research and Development Limited) is the British subsidiary of The Servier Research Group, a leading French independent research based organisation specialising in ethical pharmaceuticals.
