Research presented at the European Breast Cancer Conference suggests that breast screening is effective, appropriate and reduces deaths from the disease in women aged up to 75.

Dr Alexis Willett, Policy Manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, says:

"This research demonstrates the real benefits of breast screening for women up to 75 and Breakthrough welcomes the Government's commitment to extend the age of automatic breast screening invitations to 73. However, this research also emphasises the importance of ensuring that, regardless of the upper age limit for automatic invites, all women over that age are aware of their right to continue free NHS breast screening.

"The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age, which is why Breakthrough encourages all women over 50 to attend NHS breast screening appointments when invited and for women over 70 to request their own appointment via their GP."
